Ramirez i Sesma, Joaquin

Joaquín Ramírez i Sesma ( Spanish: Joaquín Ramírez y Sesma ; 1796–1839) - 19th-century Mexican general.

Sesma commanded a brigade sent in reinforcements to the main forces of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna , who intended to crush the uprising in Mexican Texas . His initial task was to lift the siege from San Antonio de Bejar . However, shortly after the departure of Sesma’s troops, news came that the Bejar garrison under the command of General Martin Perfecto de Cosa had already capitulated and withdrawn to Laredo . Sesma joined the units of Kos in Laredo, replenishing his army of 1,000 infantry and 500 horsemen.

Santa Anna teamed up with them, crossing the Rio Grande River . Together they advanced to Behar, where on March 6, 1836 they stormed the Alamo fortress after a 13-day siege. On March 11, Sesme was ordered to follow with General Adrian Woll in San Felipe de Austin and then to Anaguac . On March 24, the order changed, and now it was supposed to support the left flank of the forces of Jose de Urrea , but the resistance met at Bizonds Ford on the Colorado River forced Sesma and Woll to camp on the south bank of the river, just two miles from the Texas troops on the opposite bank. Santa Anna continued his movement with the advance troops, and Sesma followed him.

On April 13, his troops began crossing the Brazos River at the Thompson crossing, with the goal of continuing the advance on Harrisburg. During the Battle of San Jacinto , General Sesma’s troops were on the right bank of the Brazos River, in the vicinity of the Old Fort settlement. On April 25, they joined units of Vicente Filisola and other Mexican generals during the general withdrawal of troops from Texas.
