He was born in a large family of nomadic gypsies (besides him there were 4 more brothers and 2 sisters). Father Stepan (Istvan) Demeter from the Kelderari migrated to Russia from Hungary . Mother - Praskovya, was from the kind of gypsy-servs. However, the mother was literate, the children were sent to school. Then he and his brother - George Stepanovich - entered the Leningrad Institute of Physical Culture. P.F. Lesgaft , in the same place he defended his thesis. Roman Stepanovich devoted most of his life to pedagogy. But his main business was the study of the folklore of the Gypsy-Kelderari. R. S. Demeter collected a large collection of poems, songs and fairy tales, which were later published by him together with his brother - Peter Stepanovich Demeter - a famous gypsy composer. A great contribution to the development of gypsy culture was the publication by them of a gypsy dictionary of the Kelderara dialect .

Daughter - Tamara Romanovna Demeter - gypsy artist , costume designer .

Son - Sergey Romanovich Demeter.

He died in Moscow in 1989. He was buried in a cemetery in Cherkizovo (Pushkin district, Moscow region) [1] .
