Tirgu Jiu ( rum. Târgu Jiu , also may be spelled rum. Tîrgu Jiu ) is a city in Romania , the administrative center of the Gorj County . Located in Oltenia , in the Southern Subcarpathians , on the banks of the Zhiu River.

History
Tirgu Jiu settlement was founded in 1406. and received city rights in 1597. In 1748-1764, an Orthodox Cathedral was built in the city. The sculptor Konstantin Brynkushi, who grew up in the city, decorated the Heroes Street in the city with a complex of sculptures in 1938, including one of the “Endless Columns” . During the Second World War , a concentration camp for Jews and anti-fascists was located near the city. At the same time, beginning in the 1960s, the city began to grow rapidly due to the development of coal mining . In 1992, a university was founded in the city, named after Brynkushi.

The climate is temperate continental.

Economics
The basis of the city’s economy is coal mining. Also developed are the textile , woodworking , glass industries, and the production of building materials ( cement , brick , tile ).
Sport
The city has the Pandurian Football Club . The city was born the famous Romanian football player Emil Dique .
