Ground

Despite the fact that the team was created β€œfrom scratch”, its founders had extensive experience in achieving the highest results, managing the racing team, as well as good relations in the Ford concern. The team was transformed from Paul Stewart Racing , who spoke in Formula 3000 . Although at the end of 1995, Paul Stewart Racing denied the intention to go to Formula 1, referring to the bad experience of teams such as Simtek , Pacific and Forti . But in January 1996, Jackie Stewart managed to sign a five-year contract with Ford, according to which the future Formula 1 team became the official representative of the Ford concern. At that time, Ford supplied engines for the Sauber .

Performance History

1997

SF1 car driven by Rubens Barrichello at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1997

With the support of Ford, Stewart GP debuted at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix . The car was driven by Rubens Barrichello and Jan Magnussen . The only achievement in the first season was the 2nd place of Barrichello at the Monaco Grand Prix . For Jan Magnussen, the 7th place became the highest step. The team managed to finish 8 times (3 Barrichello and 5 Magnussen) out of 34 possible. Nevertheless, the season can be considered successful. The Ford Zetec-R V10 engine mounted on the SF01 chassis turned out to be unreliable, which did not allow the team to achieve great success.

1998

The second season for Stewart GP was harder than the first. In none of the 16 races were the pilots able to climb the podium, and after 7 grand prix Jan Magnussen was replaced by Jos Verstappen , who failed to score a single point. At the end of the season, Technical Director Alain Jenkins was fired, and Harry Anderson of Jordan took his place. In the 1998 season, the team managed to score only 5 points (in 1997, 6 were scored).

1999

Johnny Herbert at the 1999 European Grand Prix

In 1999, Ford acquired the company Cosworth Racing , which produces engines for racing cars. Instead of Verstappen, Johnny Herbert got behind the wheel of the SF03 . Already in the first Australian Grand Prix, Barrichello managed to come fifth, starting from the pit lane. He also won the second podium for the team in San Marino , the Brazilian finished third. In the same season, the first and only victory of the Stewart Grand Prix was won. She won Johnny Herbert at the European Grand Prix on the Nurburgring . At the end of the season, the team became 4 in the constructors' cup with 36 points ahead of teams such as Williams-Supertec and Benetton Playlife . The last race for the Stewart GP was the Japanese Grand Prix .
After the successful 1999 season, at the end of that year, the team was sold to Ford and in the 2000 season it already performed under the name Jaguar Racing . The sale of the team on its take-off by Jackie Stewart was a complete surprise, one of the reasons for the sale was Paul Stewart's disease - in 1999, Jackie's son was diagnosed with cancer [1] .
