Culture Kanegrate - prehistoric archaeological culture of Italy and Switzerland, which arose in the 13th century. BC e. and existed before the Iron Age in the Po River valley in the west of Lombardy, in the east of Piedmont and on the territory of the Ticino canton.
The name comes from the area of Canegrate in Lombardy, south of Legnano and north of Milan , where in 1926 important archaeological finds were made related to this culture - about 50 graves with ceramics and metal objects. These burials are among the richest in the number of finds in Northern Italy. Systematic excavations first took place in 1953-1956.
The Kanegrate culture is evidence of the arrival of the first migratory wave of a supposedly Celtic population from the northwestern Alps. The Celts crossed the Alps, settled downstream between the lakes Maggiore and Como . They brought with them new funeral rites - cremation instead of the previous burial in the ground.
Archaeological finds suggest that the penetration of the Celts into this territory was not peaceful. In the finds of the Kanegrate culture, no connection with the previous Polad culture is found.
The population of Kanegrate remained homogeneous for a limited period of time, for about a century, after which the merger with the local Ligurian population began, with the formation of the culture of Holasekka .
With the culture of Kanegrate or Golasekka you can identify the people of Orobia , who are attributed to the creation of the city of Como .
