Royal Borough of Greenwich ( English Borrɛnɪtʃ, ɡrɪ-, -ɪdʒ /
listen ) - London’s “sea gate”, a historic suburb , and now - one of 32 London boroughs , located in inner London , in the southeast of the British capital, on the right bank of the Thames . It has long been closely associated with the British Navy . Greenwich is famous for being the zero point of reference for longitude and time zones of the globe. The Zero Meridian is historically associated with the Greenwich Observatory . Greenwich is considered one of the most prestigious areas of London [3] . But in terms of real estate prices, Greenwich is noticeably inferior to such expensive areas of London [4] as Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Kensington and Hampstead [5] .

The toponym Grenewic or Grenevic is of Saxon origin, and literally means the green village or the village on the green ("green village ") [6] .
Content
History
The area was formed in 1965 with the formation of Greater London , the merger of two areas - Greenwich and Woolwich [7] . In 1997, the Greenwich embankment as part of the Greenwich Hospital and Greenwich Park with Queens House was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
The Russian poet N.P. Ogaryov died in Greenwich in 1877.
Population
According to the 2011 census, 255,500 people lived in borough Greenwich . Of these, 21.8% were children (under 15 years old), 66.2% of people of working age (from 16 to 64 years old) and 12.0% of elderly people (from 65 years old and above) [2] .
Ethnic composition
The main ethnic groups, according to the 2007 census [8] :
74.2% are white , including 66.7% are white British , 1.9% are white Irish, and 5.6% are other white ( Jews , Spaniards );
12.4% are black , including 8.5% are black Africans ( Nigerians , Ghanaians , Caboverians ), 3.1% are black Caribbean and 0.8% are other blacks;
6.2% are from South Asia , including 4.3% are Indians , 1.1% are Pakistanis and 0.8% are Bengalis ;
3.0% - mestizos , including 1.1% - black Caribs mixed with white, 0.7% - Asians mixed with white, 0.5% - black Africans mixed with white and 0.7% - other mestizos;
1.5% are Chinese ;
1.3% - other Asians ( Vietnamese , Turks , Thais );
1.2% - others.

Transport
Paved in 1899-1902 under the Thames, a pedestrian tunnel links Greenwich to Dog Island .
Attractions
- The Royal Greenwich Observatory , through which the zero or Greenwich meridian passes, was founded by Charles II in 1674. Now in the buildings of the old observatory there is a museum of astronomical and navigation devices (the observatory was withdrawn from Greenwich in 1990 due to light clogging). The observatory building is located in Greenwich Park .
- Royal Maritime Hospital was built in 1694-1705. designed by Christopher Wren , who took the House of Disabled People in Paris as a model. Previously, on the site of the hospital for sailors, there was a medieval royal palace ( Palace of Placentia ), from which the Queen's house ( Queens House ), built for Anna Danish by the architect Inigo Jones , was preserved. Later, the Royal Naval College was located in this building, and the hospital building is currently being used by the University of Greenwich .
- The famous tea clipper “ Catti Sark ” is set in Greenwich for eternal parking in a dry dock. Nearby is the National Maritime Museum (opened in 1937).
- The Greenwich Peninsula , on which the Millennium Dome and the O2 Arena are located .
- The monument to Yuri Gagarin was opened in Greenwich in May 2013 [10] .
- Eltem Palace - The former royal residence, built in the XIV century. The building currently existing is a reconstruction completed in the 1930s, which includes, however, an authentic large hall of the 15th century.
In the foreground is Greenwich Park with Queens House and Greenwich Hospital buildings.
In the background is the East End with the Canary Wharf skyscraper district.
