Pre-war time
Born in a peasant family. Russian He graduated from two courses at the Leningrad Institute of Industrial Engineering.
Since October 1937, in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Fleet [2] , he was called up for the special forces of the Komsomol Central Committee . He graduated from the Higher Naval School named after M.V. Frunze in 1939. Since September 1939, he served in the Pacific Fleet as the commander of the warhead of the submarine Shch-125 . In 1942 he graduated from the Pacific Fleet Scuba Diving Training Unit, then returned to his crew as an assistant submarine commander . From April 1943, he commanded the submarine M-6 , and from November 1943, the submarine M-115 .
World War II
In May 1944, the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command decided to strengthen the Black Sea Fleet , partially replenishing its losses in submarines. Among others, in May-July 1944, the M-115 was delivered by rail from Vladivostok to Poti . On the Black Sea, under the command of N. I. Smirnov, the crew as soon as possible assembled, reconstructed and adjusted the units after assembling the submarine, and then sea trials with dives [3] . However, in September 1944, Germany lost its last naval base on the Black Sea and was forced to flood all its warships, after which the hostilities of the Black Sea Fleet in the Great Patriotic War ended. I did not have time to carry out military campaigns. For the successful commissioning of the submarine, N. I. Smirnov was awarded his first prize - the Order of the Patriotic War , 2nd degree.
Post-war time
After the war, he continued to serve in the Black Sea Fleet . Since October 1945, commanded the submarine S-31 . From October 1947 he was the chief of staff of the submarine division, from November 1949 - the commander of the submarine division. Since December 1950 - Deputy Head and Head of Division at the Combat Training Directorate of the Headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet . Since November 1953 - the commander of the 151st submarine brigade, since November 1954 - the chief of staff of the 21st submarine division of the Black Sea Fleet. From June 1956 to December 1957 - commander of the submarine forces of the Black Sea Fleet, then sent to study at the Academy
In 1959 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR . Since November 1959 - commander of the submarine forces of the Baltic Fleet . Since June 1960 - Chief of Staff of the Black Sea Fleet . Since June 1964 - chief of operational management - deputy chief of the General Staff of the Navy of the USSR. Since March 10, 1969 - commander of the Pacific Fleet . Since September 11, 1974 - First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy of the USSR [2] . On November 5, 1973, N. I. Smirnov was awarded the military rank of Fleet Admiral .
N. I. Smirnov made a significant contribution to the development of the domestic fleet on the basis of advanced scientific developments, in particular to reducing the noise of submarines. On his initiative, together with academician A.P. Aleksandrov , the development of a compact nuclear propulsion system for torpedoes began in the early 80s, and by the end of the 80s the country's top military and political leadership was informed of readiness for creation, approval was received However, it was possible to implement the development only relatively recently, in the Status-6 project.
Since March 1988 - military inspector-adviser to the Group of Inspectors General of the USSR Ministry of Defense .
Member of the CPSU (b) since 1942. A candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1971-1976. Member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 8-11th convocations (1970-1989).
The last years of his life he lived in Moscow . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery .
Memory
- Streets in the city of Vladivostok and in the homeland, in the village of Parfenyevo, are named after Admiral Smirnov.
- In Moscow , on the facade of the house in which N. I. Smirnov lived, a memorial plaque was installed.
