Biography
Early life
Joel Madden was born in , Maryland, into an Irish-American family. He has a twin brother, Benji Madden , who is also the founder of the band Good Charlotte and its solo guitarist. The twins have an older brother - Josh, and a younger sister - Sarah. Joel studied at La Plait , at High School.
When Joel was sixteen years old, his father left the family, causing them financial difficulties. Joel, as a teenager, worked hard to help his mother feed her family. Later, Joel, along with his brothers and sister, changed his surname from Combs to Madden, his mother's maiden name.
Good Charlotte
In 1995 , at the age of 16, he attended a Beastie Boys concert with his brother Benji. Soon, both decided to create their own group with their friend. Soon Madden took in a group of friends from High School - Paul Thomas and Aaron Escolopio. So the band was born Good Charlotte .
Other projects
In 2001, Good Charlotte starred in the movie Not Another Teen Movie . Later, in 2004 , they played in the movie Fat Albert , and in 2006, Joel and Benji starred in the film Material Girls .
Joel had his own clothing line, which he owned with his brothers, Benji and Josh. In early 2006, clothing became the DCMA team . The line belongs to Joel and his brothers, Benji and Josh, as well as their friend Tal Cooperman.
In November 2007 , Nicole Richie and Joel created the "Richie and Madden Children's Fund." The charity will create and strengthen inspirational registry networks for the purchase of goods for mothers and their families who need it. Joel is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Personal life
Joel met Hilary Duff in 2004 when she was 16 years old and he was twenty-four. In 2005, Hilary and Joel had a secret marriage, which they hid from everyone, since he was committed intoxicated in Las Vegas. Later, the marriage was canceled. In November 2006, after two and a half years, Madden and Duff broke up.
Madden began dating Nicole Richie shortly after he and Duff broke up. Joel and Nicole have two children: daughter Harlow Winter Kate Madden (born January 11, 2008) and son Sparrow James Midnight Madden (born September 9, 2009). Madden and Richie got married in 2010.
