Botanical Description
Representatives of the genus are large perennial rhizome herbs up to 1 m high.
Stems - with a diameter over 1 cm; smooth, thick, trihedral or tetrahedral.
The leaves are alternate, usually only basal, with short open sheaths . Leaf blades are long, linear, flat or grooved, leathery, 1.5-3 cm wide with smooth or sharply serrated edges.
The flowers are small, nondescript, bisexual, collected in 1-2 (or more) very dense, large, spherical or oblong, apical heads up to 6 cm in diameter, at the base of which there are long, covering leaves deflected downward. There are six stamens , in two circles, free. Perianth consists of six free segments located in two circles, remaining with the fruits.
The fruit is a loculicidal three-nodule capsule up to 1.5 cm long, with three spindle-shaped spike-shaped seeds at both ends. The embryo is small, more or less cylindrical, surrounded by a plentiful mealy starchy endosperm .

Taxonomy
In the APG II system (2003), this family is included in the order of Poales clades of Commelinids of the Monocotyledones class.
In the APG system (1998), the genera belonging to this family were separated into their own families ( Prioniaceae and Thurniaceae ) and Poales were included in the order.
The Kronquist system (1981) placed the Thurniaceae family in the Juncales order of the Liliopsida class Commelinidae .
The Wettstein system (1935) placed the Thurniaceae family in the Liliiflorae order.
