Atyrau Oil Refinery or Atyrau Refinery (until 1991 Guryevsky ) is one of the three leading oil refineries in Kazakhstan . Built during the Great Patriotic War for two years, it was put into operation in September 1945 on the basis of a complete set of equipment supplied from the USA under a Lend-Lease . The owner of the refinery is KazMunayGas JSC (99.53%) [3] . The design processing capacity is 5.5 million tons per year, the processing depth is up to 87%. [four]

Factory History
The design of the plant began in 1943 on the basis of the planned assignment of the People's Commissariat of the Petroleum Industry of the USSR . The construction of the plant was in difficult wartime conditions. The technical design of the plant was developed by the American company Badger and Sons. The adjustment was carried out by the design organization of the state trust No. 1 of the People's Commissariat of the Petroleum Industry of the USSR. The binding to local conditions was carried out by local designers Embaneftproekt .
The initial capacity of the plant was 800 thousand tons of oil refining per year and was based on oil from the Embinskoye field, imported from the Baku distillate. From the very beginning, the plant developed according to the fuel option, with the release of aviation and automobile gasolines , various motor and boiler fuels.
With the development of the West Kazakhstan region , an increase in oil production since 1965, the refinery, through reconstruction, began to consider the issue of replacing expensive imported distillate with distillate of its own production.
In the 60s of the XX century, a course was taken to increase the volume of oil refining through the construction of new technological units.
From 1969 to 2006, the Refinery for primary processing of oil ELOU-AVT-3, catalytic reforming of LG-35-11 / 300, delayed coking, calcination of petroleum coke, production of technical nitrogen , hydrotreating and isomerization were built and put into operation at the plant gasoline, hydrotreating and dewaxing of diesel fuel , purification and production of hydrogen , sulfur production with a crystallization unit.
For more than 60 years of operation, the refinery has become a modern enterprise for the production of petroleum products for fuel purposes. A large technical re-equipment of all technological units for oil refining was carried out, which allowed to increase the capacity up to 5 million tons per year.
Current Situation
Since mid-1999, the holding of a controlling stake (86.7%) of the plant became CJSC NNK Kazakhoil , later JSC NK KazMunayGas . The owner of the stake - 99.17% is KazMunayGas JSC.
From 2004 to 2012, Talgat Baitaziev was the general director of Atyrau Oil Refinery LLP [5] .
From 2012 to 2016, Kairat Urazbaev was the CEO.
From 2016 to February 2018, Galimzhan Amanturlin was the CEO.
The Atyrau Oil Refinery for the first time refined Tengiz oil - a new type of oil with a significantly higher content of light fractions and, at the same time, with a high content of methyl - ethyl mercaptans in it, which required careful preparation and solution of both technological and environmental problems for its processing. The share of Tengiz oil refining is 12%.
In 2003-2006, the "Japanese reconstruction" by Marubeni Corp. was carried out at the refinery, as a result of which the following plants were built:
1. The combined installation of hydrotreating gasoline and diesel:
* hydrotreating gasoline;
* isomerization of light gasoline;
* hydrotreating and dewaxing of diesel fuel
2 . Installation for the production and purification of hydrogen;
3. Installation of sulfur production ;
4. Biological treatment facilities.
In 2009-2017, the plant went through two more stages of modernization: a) construction of the Aromatic Hydrocarbon Complex (2015):
1. Installation of catalytic reforming with a benzene recovery unit (CCR):
* extractive distillation of Morphylane,
2 . Flavored Hydrocarbon Production Complex (PARAMAX):
* prefractionation of xylenes and Eluxyl;
* isomerization of xylene XuMax;
* transalkylation of toluene TransPlus;
* separation of the raffinate;
As a result of the launch of the CPA, the plant began to produce benzene in the industrial volume.
b) the construction of the Oil Refining Complex (2018):
1. Catalytic cracking of R2R;
2. Desulfurization of LPG Sulfrex;
3. Hydrotreating PrimeD gas oil;
4. Selective hydrotreating of naphtha Prime G;
5. Oligomerization of butenes;
6. Hydrotreating naphtha;
7.Esterification of light naphtha;
8. Hydrogenation of Benfrey benzene;
9. Combined sulfur production unit;
10. Gas fractionation of saturated gases SGP;
11. Isomerization of light gasoline fractions Parisom;
12. Installation of production and purification of hydrogen.
As a result , the plant’s capacity increased to 5.5 million tons of oil per year, and its depth reached 84%. The share of light oil products amounted to 75.4%. In addition to automobile fuel (gasoline and diesel fuel of K5 quality), the plant can produce valuable petrochemical raw materials - benzene (133 thousand tons), paraxylene (497 thousand tons). Starting in 2019, the plant will produce Jet A1 jet fuel (250 thousand tons). Since December 2018, the Atyrau Refinery is the only one in Kazakhstan that can produce winter fuel with PTF-32 - Khazar.
