Biography
Born in Albany , New York . Received primary education in public schools, after which he entered the world of commerce. At the age of 11, Manning got a job at the Albany Atlas newspaper publishing house, which in 1856 merged with the Argus publication. In 1865 he became the editor of the newspaper, in 1873 its owner. [2]
Manning's political career was very successful. From 1881 to 1885 he served as chairman of the New York Democratic Committee [3] [4] , and in March 1885 he received the appointment of Secretary of State of the US Treasury from President Grover Cleveland . [5] Manning resigned from this post in February 1887 due to poor health. [6]
He died in the same year in Albany from inflammation of the kidneys ( Bright disease ). [7] An engraving portrait of Manning appears on American US paper notes, on 1886 20.00 silver certificates.
