Biography

Born in Albany , New York . Received primary education in public schools, after which he entered the world of commerce. At the age of 11, Manning got a job at the Albany Atlas newspaper publishing house, which in 1856 merged with the Argus publication. In 1865 he became the editor of the newspaper, in 1873 its owner. Manning's political career was very successful. From 1881 to 1885 he served as chairman of the New York Democratic Committee [3] [4] , and in March 1885 he received the appointment of Secretary of State of the US Treasury from President Grover Cleveland . [5] Manning resigned from this post in February 1887 due to poor health. [6]

He died in the same year in Albany from inflammation of the kidneys ( Bright disease ). [7] An engraving portrait of Manning appears on American US paper notes, on 1886 20.00 silver certificates.
