History
The Institute dates back to March 13, 1928 , when the Seismological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (SIAN) was created [3] . P. M. Nikiforov was elected Director of SIAN
The Institute has developed large scientific schools in planetary and theoretical geophysics , studying the internal structure of the Earth using geophysical methods, seismology and assessing natural risks, geomagnetism , physics of the ionosphere and magnetosphere.
The Institute was engaged in the study of physical processes in the bowels of the Earth, the development of models of the dynamics and internal structure of the Earth , the study of the seismicity of the Earth and the physics of the earthquake source, seismic zoning , the development of the theory and computer technologies for interpreting geophysical data.
Experts studied the physical fields of the Earth , questions of paleomagnetism and magnetic properties of rocks, develop methods of geophysical monitoring to predict natural and technological disasters, and study the problems of the origin and early history of the Earth .
Association
Since 2004, it became part of the Joint Institute for Physics of the Earth. O. Yu. Schmidt RAS.
