Botanical Description

Plants - perennial grasses with a height of 15 to 90 cm .

Inflorescences are multi-flowered baskets with a tiled wrapper. The flowers are tubular, mostly bisexual, from white-pink to purple in color.

Fruit - achene with crest.

Economic Significance and Application

During flowering, it attracts insects like a honey plant.

Yellow juice, previously widely used as a dye for wool.

Distribution and habitat

Homeland - the Old World (in the east to Siberia and in the south to Central Asia ) [4] , but is also found in North America .

Crowned Serpukha grows in the middle and southern parts of the European territory of the former USSR, in the Caucasus, in Central Asia and Siberia. Serpukha dyeing is found in the Baltic states and in the middle and southern strip of the European part. [5]

Classification

From 25 to 70 types of serpukh are distinguished [6] . Sometimes some species are isolated in a separate genus Klasea , then the number of species is reduced to 20 [7] . According to the database of The Plant List (as of August 2016), the genus includes 40 species [8] :
