History
The first version of QuarkXPress was released in 1987 and runs on Macintosh computers ; The first version for Windows appeared in 1992 . Version 3.3 for Mac, released in 1996, was seen as stable and working with Adobe Postscript fonts as easily as with Apple TrueType fonts .
From the first versions, QuarkXPress included the XTension application programming interface , which allowed third-party developers to create their own additional extensions for the application. Introduced in 1989 , XTension, along with Apple Computer HyperCard , made Quark one of the first programs to work with extensions created by third-party developers.
In the 1990s, QuarkXPress gained widespread popularity in the field of professional typesetting and printing design due to its ease of use, unpretentiousness of system requirements, support for vector fonts and other features widely demanded in the industry.
QuarkXPress, despite being constantly criticized for the high cost of a license and its relatively long implementation period, was the de facto industry standard at the time its main rival Adobe InDesign appeared in 1999 , covering about 90% of the market.
The release of the fifth version in 2002 led to a conflict with Apple , because the release still did not support Mac OS X , while Adobe InDesign , released the same week, supported. At the same time, the president of Quark Inc. Fred Ebrahimi sharply criticized the Macintosh platform and noted that those who are not satisfied with Quark on the Mac platform should try something else.
Due to the rivalry with InDesign, Quark began to lose ground and was forced to take a number of steps in order to stay in the market. A version for Mac OS X was released in 2003 . In 2004, Quark began to reduce the cost of a license; in 2006, he began to distribute version 5, outdated at that time, for free (as an appendix to the British magazine Computer Shopper), thus proposing to attract consumers to the subsequent purchase of the updated version. Despite previous disagreements, in August 2006, Quark released a new version with Intel Mac support, overtaking InDesign by about 10 months.
