Early Years and Education

She was born on May 12, 1968 in the Bloomsbury area , known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, in central London and spent all her childhood in the Brunswick Center residential complex.

Her mother, Josephine Ford, was a florist , and was sure that little Catherine would continue her family business when she grew up. Katherine's father left the family when she was only six months old, and therefore only her grandmother and godmothers helped raise her future actress.

As a child, she suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder , characterized by verbal associations. For example, she would never have left her sweater on the floor, as she was sure that this would definitely bring misfortune to her mother, whose name also begins with the letter combination “j”. Moreover, she was terribly shy [5] .

She studied at first at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Elementary School in Holborn , and then at Notre Dame Secondary Catholic School for Girls in Southwark . Already a teenager, she dreamed of a professional acting career, so Catherine spent her last years of studies at the Catholic School for Boys “ Salesian College ” in Battersea , where she had the opportunity to study acting.

She received her acting education at the Central School of Stage Speech and Dramatic Art . She couldn’t get there right away, but she didn’t give up, and in the end she managed to do it only the fourth time [6] .

Career

Career start

Katherine's debut on television took place in early 1991. In the next few years, she repeatedly played tiny roles in such long-playing dramatic series as “ Purely English Killing ” and “ London is Burning ” [7] .

In the mid-nineties, Katherine often began appearing on the stage. She participated in the performances of the Royal National Theater , and also toured for several years with the National Youth Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Theater [8] . At the same time, she began to speak with her own stand-up numbers .

In 2000, she began to conquer the Edinburgh Festival along with a performance by Lee Mac , which was nominated for a local award . A year later, the future star again went to the festival with her solo show, which was already attended by scenes that became cult after several years thanks to her sketch series .

In 2002, along with Simon Pegg and other actors, Catherine starred in the surreal sketch show " Big Fuss ." Later that year, she played her first major role in the sitcom Wild West , which tells about the inhabitants of a small Cornish village, where Don French and David Bradley also appeared.

Take-off career

In 2004, she launched her own comedy sketch series “ The Katherine Tate Show, ” which glorified Katherine and gave her many honorary awards and nominations. The series lasted three seasons, several Christmas releases were also filmed [9] . In it, she masterfully transformed into people from different social backgrounds and age groups. Of the many heroines who appeared in the series, the audience most appreciated the images of schoolgirl Lauren Cooper and pensioner Joannie Taylor .

In 2005, she returned to the stage in the play " Some Girls " with David Schwimmer . Then she took part in the royal performance for Elizabeth II and Prince Philip , and also appeared in two historical series - in one of the series “ Miss Marple Agatha Christie ” and the film adaptation of “ Cold House ” by Charles Dickens .

Later that year, she, along with David Tennant, appeared at the end of the Doomsday series of the iconic science fiction series Doctor Who , and then became the main character in his Christmas runaway, The Runaway Bride .

The second half of 2006 became very busy for her on films. The following year brought her the main roles in the comedy dramas The Bad Mother ’s Diary and Mrs. Ratcliffe ’s Revolution .

In early 2007, Katherine took part in the charity television marathon of the organization " Detente by Laughter ", and literally overshadowed all other participants. Then, five fun sketches were shown with the heroines of the Katherine Tate Show and various British celebrities, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair .

Another wave of success surged in her in 2008, when Catherine returned to the role of Donna Noble in the series Doctor Who , but now as a constant companion of the protagonist [11] . Initially, her return was not planned, but after interest from both the creators of the series and herself, acting showrunner Russell T Davis gladly returned her heroine in the fourth season, and then in the special edition of “ The End of Time ” in 2009.

Subsequent work

At the end of 2009, “The Grandma 's Christmas Story ” was released - a kind of film adaptation of the famous novel by Charles Dickens , in the center of which instead of the well-known Scrooge was a rude, foul-talking old lady Joannie Taylor , who had previously appeared throughout the seasons of “ The Catherine Tate Show, ” which they were desperately trying to put on the way true three eccentric ghosts performed by Ben Miller , David Tennant and Roger Lloyd-Pack [12] .

In 2014, the second season was released. In the same year, the Katherine Tate Show spin-off called “ Katherine Tate Granny ” started, in which her famous heroine Joannie Taylor returned.
