Tonkhe ( Kor. 동해시 ? , 東海 市? ) Is a city in Gangwon Province, South Korea . Two major ports are the port of Donghe and the port in Mukho Bay. The railway line Yondon and the Tonhe road pass through the city.

Content
History
In ancient times, on the site of Tonkhe, the Silchik tribal union was located. In the era of the Joseon Dynasty , in 1631, Pakkonni village appeared in the chronicles, part of the area (now the city) Samchhok . By 1648 refers to the village of Manzanni, part of the area (now the city) Gangneung . Over time, these two villages grew into two fairly large and urbanized settlements, Bukpönmen and Manzanmen, respectively. In 1979, a decision was made to establish the city of Tonhe on the basis of these two administrative units. The decree came into force on April 1, 1980 [1] .
Geography
The city is located in the southeastern part of the province of Gangwon-do, on the coast of the Sea of Japan ( Tonhe Bay). The landscape is predominantly mountainous, along the coast stretches a strip of sandy beaches. It borders on Jeanson County in the west, the city of Samchhok in the south and the city of Gangneung in the north. The landscape is predominantly mountainous, large deposits of limestone [2] .

Economy
The city houses the industrial complex “Pukpion” (the main branches of production are metallurgy and light industry ). In December 2005, the Bukpion complex became a free economic zone. Also in the city's economy, a significant part is occupied by the ports - the port of Tonhe and the port in the Mukho Bay. Fisheries are well developed - a total of 346 fishing vessels were registered in the city in 2005. The city’s budget for 2005 is 1993 billion won [4] .
Tonkhe is a center for sushi fish dishes in the country. Here is the area known as "Sushitun". This area is stretched for two kilometers, there are hundreds of shops, which sell fresh sushi and its Korean counterpart, fish Hwe [5] .
Tourism and attractions
Natural:
- A long strip of beaches makes Tonkhe a popular seaside resort. During the season, tens of thousands of tourists rest here.
- The Donghe Mountains are located in the western part of the city. Popular mountain tourism and mountain biking . In the surrounding mountains laid several routes. The most popular places for mountain tourism are Mount Thuthasan and the valley of Muryn with waterfalls.
- In the vicinity of the city there are many caves, some of which, for example, the Cheongkong cave, are open for tourists.
Historical:
- One of the largest Buddhist monasteries in Korea, Samkhvasa , built in the 7th century, is located in Tonhe.
- Cottage Heamjon - the residence of the nobility in the era of the Koryo dynasty.
- Tuthasanson fortress - located on Tuthasan mountain.
Festivals:
- Every October, the folk festival Muryn is held. Demonstrated traditional Korean art, performances of folk groups.
- Squid Festival - held annually in the summer. Culinary exhibitions and fights, as well as competitions for catching squid with bare hands.
- Sunrise Festival - held on New Year's Eve. Legend has it that the first sunrise in the year brings happiness, so every year on January 1, the public gathers on the shore of the Sea of Japan in order to meet the first sunrise [6] .
