Story
Evelyn Salt is brutally interrogated in a North Korean prison, trying to gain recognition of belonging to American intelligence. Suddenly, she is released as part of an exchange. CIA colleague Ted Winter, who met her at a border checkpoint, said that she was freed by the efforts of her close friend, the famous arachnologist Michael Krause. Subsequently, Michael becomes the husband of Evelyn.
Two years later, Salt, along with Winter and an FBI agent , Peabody interrogates Russian defector Orlov. Orlov talks about X-Day, an operation conceived in the USSR during the Cold War to destroy the United States with agents deployed in the country's special services: at the funeral of US Vice President in New York , Russian President Matveev will be killed by Russian spy Evelyn Salt. Suspicion falls on her that she is a “ mole ”. Winter is trying to protect Salt, and Peabody insists on holding her back. At this time, Orlov escapes, killing two employees accompanying him. Taking advantage of the turmoil, Evelyn runs away, using his extraordinary knowledge and abilities. At home, she discovers the disappearance of her husband and manages to escape, stuffing a travel bag with weapons and equipment, as well as grabbing the poisonous spiders that her husband was holding.
Having escaped from the chase, Salt flies to New York, changes his appearance and prepares for the operation, including extracting poison from the spider. During the funeral ceremony, she sneaks into the tightly guarded church of St. Bartholomew, captures President Matveyev and shoots him at the time of the arrival of the special services. She is seized, beaten and taken away, but Salt manages to escape along the road. Media reports of the death of the Russian president.
Shown are the heroine’s memories of how she grows up in the Soviet Union , Orlov teaches her and other children to obey him and win over the American government - before X-Day. After completing the training, they staged the death of her parents in a car accident, bandaged Salt meets with the American consul, and she was sent to the United States.
Salt arrives on a barge, where Orlov and a dozen Russian agents await her, with whom Salt grew up and underwent special training. To make sure of Salt’s absolute devotion, in her presence they kill the bound Michael, but she does not outwardly express any emotions, only asks Orlov if he is satisfied now. Orlov and the rest of the agents lower their weapons and warmly welcome Salt, calling her sister. Orlov gives her the following task: she must meet with another agent, a NATO officer, and with him carry out the assassination of the US president and seize control of the country's nuclear potential . After listening to the assignment, Salt kills Orlov, and then deals with all the other agents on the barge.
Then Salt goes to meet with a NATO officer and recognizes him as Schneider, whom she has known since childhood in the Orlov training center. Schneider, disguised as Colonel Tomasz, travels with Salt to the White House . Here Schneider commits a deliberately suicidal act, opening a sudden fire and detonating a bomb. Schneider is killed, the secret service takes the president to an underground bunker, where they begin preparations for launching strategic missiles and activate codes for launching a nuclear briefcase for this. Salt enters the bunker after them, neutralizing the guards on the road. During the activation of the codes, Winter unexpectedly opens fire and kills everyone except the president, who appears to be Nikolai Tarkovsky, and then blows him unconscious. Winter continues preparations for launching rockets, puts the president’s hand on the scanner to identify him . He explains to Salt that he plans to launch missiles at Tehran and Mecca and thereby provoke the unification of 1.6 billion Muslims against the United States. Salt tries to persuade her to let her in. Winter hesitates, but then he learns from the TV show that President Matveev did not actually die, but woke up from the action of a paralyzing poison. Winter condemns Salt for falling in love with Michael instead of recruiting him, and says that it was he who helped Orlov abduct her husband. Salt manages to break into the bunker and after a long battle with Winter, she manages to stop the launch of nuclear missiles at the last moment. Appearing agents shoot at Salt, she falls, but a bulletproof vest saves her. When she is led past Winter, she kills him with the help of her handcuffs.
Salt is put on a helicopter, where she explains to Peabody her mission, the reason for Winter’s murder, and the situation with numerous moles. Peabody was initially skeptical and beat Salt. But, having received SMS with the message that Salt’s fingerprints were found on the barge where they found the murdered Orlov and other Russian agents, Peabody begins to believe that Salt plans to neutralize the Russian agents. He frees her from the handcuffs, and she jumps out of the helicopter into the water. In the final scene, two helicopters circle above the water, and Salt gets ashore and the whole bloodied one, in a light shirt, runs through the snow among the trees.
Other versions
Three alternative versions for Blu-ray and DVD have a number of plot changes. The total duration of the film is increased by four minutes. The number of memories from the past has been increased, the scenes of violence are more pronounced. The ending of the film is also changed. While in the bunker, Winter kills the US president along with everyone else, and in the final scene, the media reports that the new US president, Joseph Stephen, announced that with the death of Salt, the terrorist group she was a member of was completely destroyed. This announcement was made by the US President during a peaceful visit to Moscow, where he laid flowers at the crash site, where in 1974 his parents and sister died during a visit to Russia. The last words of the film are a hint that the new US President is one of those who was trained by Orlov in his childhood, which does not exclude the possibility that the film “Salt” will have a sequel.
In the extended version of the film, the duration is increased by one more minute. In the final, Salt arrives in Russia, where he kills Orlov (there is no scene of his death on a barge in this version) and destroys the camp for preparing children for future espionage.
