Story

117 year Roman garrisons in northern Britain are trying to suppress the resistance of the locals, the Picts , who are led byKing Gorlacon is being destroyed by the outposts of the Romans one by one. Centurion Quintus Diy , the only survivor of the Picts, was captured by them because of his knowledge of their language. At that time, Agricola , the Roman governor of Britain, receives reinforcements from the government of Rome, who wanted complete capture of Britain, in the form of the IX legion under the command Titus Flavius Viril , who arrived on the island with the goal of "erasing the Picts and their leader from the face of the earth . " The viceroy gives him to help a dumb Picter ranger named Etain .

Stepping north, the legion saves Diy, who escaped from captivity. Etain, who hates the Romans for killing her family, traps the Legion. A fierce battle begins, in which the entire IX Legion dies, and then the Picts are captured by the commander Titus Flavius Viril. Diy, with six survivors: veterans Bot and " Brick ", soldiers Macrom Leonid , Taxi and Tarak , the cook, find out that the general was captured. Warriors decide to save him, take off their armor and hit the road light. They find the Picts camp and penetrate it at night. But they can’t remove from the chain commander; then he assigns his post of chief of the IX Legion to Diy and orders him to withdraw the remaining to Roman territory. When retreating, one of the Romans, Dachshund, kills the son of Gorlacon. The next morning, after the boy’s funeral, they give Viril a sword and arrange his duel with Etain, which ends with the death of the Roman.

Seven legionnaires decide to return through the north, as they learn that the Picts are looking for them. Etain and the barbarians almost overtake them, but they jump into the waterfall, only the cook Tarak breaks his leg and dies from shots in the back; the rest survive and the current carries them ashore, and Makr and Dachshund separate from the group and stumble upon a pack of wolves.

At night, Diy and his detachment camp on the shore and soon find out that the Picts are located very close by. Diy and Brick make a raid on the camp, they kill several sentries and find out that there are no trackers in the camp. Interrogating the dying pict in his native language, Dij learns that the Picts are not chasing them because of a war between peoples, but only for revenge, it also turns out that Etain attacks the camp of the legionnaires left on the shore, kills Leonid and wounds Bot.

Meanwhile, Macr and Dachshunds are still chased by wolves. Suddenly, Dachshund falls and Makr returns to help him, but Dachshund wounds Makra in the leg and leaves him to be eaten by wolves.

Diy, Bot and "Brick" stumble upon a shack in the forest where the Picts exile lives - Arianna She feeds them, treats Botha, and when Etain arrives in the shack one day, hides the Romans in the basement. The next morning, when Bot can already go, the legionnaires leave, and Ariana, who feels something for Diyu, gives them food on the road to the Roman fort, located nearby. Arriving there, the legionnaires find him abandoned. An order on the wall informs that the Romans retreated to Val Hadrian . Seeing approaching Etain, they prepare for battle. In the battle, Diy kills Etain, and the heroically battled Brick dies from the wounds inflicted.

At night, Dij and Bot meet Dachshund and continue on the three of them. Near Val Hadrian, Thaks threatens Diy, who is about to report his crime. A battle ensues in which Diem kills Dachshund. Meanwhile, Bot jumps into the camp, but they kill him, mistaking him for a pic. Arriving at the camp, Diem reports to the governor about the situation. Agricola, believing that the news of the destruction of the IX Legion will undermine his authority before Rome and cause the rise of partisan movements among the local population, decides to completely bury the history of the legion and kill Dius as the last survivor.

The governor’s daughter organizes an attempt, but Diy kills the guards, being wounded during the battle. Averted by the betrayal of the Romans, he goes to live with Arianna, as devoted to his people as he is. Diy repeats the words: “This is neither the beginning nor the end of my story” , which he uttered at the very beginning of the film, suggesting a possible continuation.

Making a movie

The script for the film was written by director Neil Marshall under the working title Ninth Legion . According to historical data, the IX Spanish Legion, numbering more than 4000 people, went from Val Hadrian to Scotland and disappeared. Historians make various assumptions about the fate of the legion: some believe that the legion was disbanded, others believe that they were killed years later in Germany. Regarding the use of the legend as the basis of the film, Marshall said: “It is assumed that the film will not be historically accurate. I took this legend and am exploring ... it is a thriller ” [1] .

Filming began in February 2009. [2] Among the locations where the shooting took place, there are Scottish Badenoch , Srafspie [1] and the Glenfeshie Estate in Keyngroms . Filming also took place in London, at Ealing Studios , and in the vicinity of Surrey [3] , such as Alice Holt Forest. [4] On the set in Badenoch and Strafspie, Roman soldiers and Picts were portrayed by groups engaged in historical reconstructions . [one]
