Clary sage oil is an essential oil found in the flowers and leaves of clary sage ( Salvia sclarea L. ), cultivated in Moldova , Russia , Bulgaria , France , Germany and other countries.

There are two types of aromatic products:

  • specifically clary sage oil ;
  • absolute clary sage oil .

Properties

Concret - a waxy mass of light green in color with a grassy odor . It is soluble in ethanol (1: 3 - in 90%), insoluble in water.

Chemical Composition

The composition of specific oil includes sclareol (about 40%), linalool , sesquiterpene alcohols of an unknown structure, acetic acid , linalyl acetate and other components.

Getting

Oil-specific is obtained by extraction of inflorescences and leaves with petroleum ether, followed by distillation of the solvent, the oil yield of 0.6-1.5%.

Absolute oil is obtained by treating a concrete with an excess of ethanol, followed by removal of waxes or from inflorescences and leaves by distillation with steam, the yield of oil.

The main manufacturers are Moldova , Russia , Bulgaria , Ukraine .

Application

Used as a component of perfume compositions.

It is also used to isolate sclareol, which is used to obtain substances with the smell of ambergris - Ambrial , Ambroxide and others. In the food industry , clary sage essential oil is used in the manufacture of distilleries and confectioneries to give them a muscat flavor. In the tobacco industry, it is used to flavor expensive tobacco varieties.

Clary sage oil is an aphrodisiac .
