Scientific activity

Already at the beginning of his teaching career, after meeting in 1841 with M.P. Pogodin and the collector of “Tales of the Russian People” I.P. Sakharov , P. I. Savvaitov began collecting Vologda songs, studying the dialects of the Zyryan language and describing the wonderful Vologda monasteries provinces. His first publications appeared in Pogodin’s magazine “ Moskvityan ”: a number of Vologda songs (with a preface and explanations), “Travel notes from Vologda to Ustyug ”, “Information about Ust-Sysolsky Uyezd ”, “About Vologda Church Antiquities”. Numerous articles of it, devoted mainly to the explanations of antiquity and Russian antiquities, and the characterization of remarkable Russian people, were published in the Moskvityanin, Russian Archive , Russian Antiquity , Notes of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society and many other publications.

In 1844, one of his main works appeared - “ Biblical Hermeneutics ”, which survived several editions, and the third edition was adopted as a guide to the hermeneutics class in theological educational institutions. S. M. Solsky wrote: “An important merit of this manual lies in the fact that it computes and names the most important exegetical manuals and interpretations of books of scripture published by ancient and later Western commentaries.”

Under the supervision of Savvaitov, the foundation was made for the publication of The Great Mineas-Fours, collected by Metropolitan Macarius , and Novgorod scribe books, a print of the haraite list of the Novgorod Chronicle, and the oldest of the monuments of the Novgorod chronicles - Temporary, the Prince’s Chronicle is cursed .

Savvaitov was a member of the Archaeographic Commission, a member of the Archaeological, Free Economic, Geographical Societies, the Society of History and Antiquities of Russia, the Royal Society of Antiquaries in Copenhagen, a member of the Commission for the Analysis of the affairs of the Synodal Archive. He took an active part in organizing and opening the Imperial Society of Old Russian Writers. Since 1873, P. I. Savvaitov was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in the Department of Russian Language and Literature, was an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, and since 1884 - an honorary member of the Moscow Theological Academy.
