Grandmaster Sergei Shipov, commenting on this game [4] , concluded: “Topalov conducted the game very powerfully and convincingly and naturally won.” According to Shipov, Anand made, above all, a strategic mistake by deciding to play a sharp opening in the first game of the match, which, as he knew, the opponent had previously successfully won with White.
So, the first game ended with Topalov’s victory, and he led the match with a score of 1: 0.

In the second installment, Anand fully rehabilitated for losing in the first. The party was conducted by him from the beginning to the end calmly, carefully and reliably. The first half dozen moves both players made in full accordance with the theory, then on the 15th move Anand suggested, and Topalov accepted the exchange of queens - a rare case for such positions. Equal play continued until the 24th move: White gradually increased the pressure on Black, Black, in turn, calmly parried. But then Topalov, tired of obviously maneuvering , began to play more actively, but not reliably. Anand, for his part, continued his systematic offensive, blocking Black’s attempts to be active. By the 31st move, the black position was already noticeably worse, against White there was only time - on the 32nd move they had 12 minutes versus 23 minutes for Black, but in the absence of sharp options that require deep calculation, it was not too dangerous, especially for the accustomed to quick game Ananda. On the 34th move, Black had the option “34. .. Кd5 ”, which, according to preliminary calculations, could lead to the equalization of the game, but Topalov did not find this move, and the continuation chosen by him did not save the game. At 42, the position became obviously hopeless for Black; at 43, Topalov surrendered.
Score in the match caught up: 1: 1.

The party was held in an active, principled struggle. Topalov attacked, Anand defended precisely and ingeniously. After 32 moves, the position took on a completely lifeless appearance; in fact, here the players should have put an end and agreed to a draw. However, due to the Sofia rules adopted at the initiative of the Bulgarian side , direct agreement on a draw between the rivals was not allowed. Only this can explain the last moves: in order not to engage in meaningless maneuvering, the players simply exchanged the pieces and played to the eternal check.
The result of the game is a draw. The score in the match - 1.5: 1.5.

The debut was played again, which in the second game already brought Anand the victory. Anand held the game very strongly, dominant from beginning to end, despite the fact that Topalov, at first glance, did not make any fatal mistakes. Having sacrificed a pawn for the initiative at the beginning, the champion with an active game achieved dominance in the center, after which he prepared and carried out an irresistible mate attack, which Topalov could not oppose.

The debut developed similarly to the third game up to the 15th move, when Anand instead of the previously played h6 went h5. The resulting position was not very attractive for black, White had a clear advantage, however, due to an inaccurate 22nd move, White was able to level up. Then, because of an inaccurate game on the kingside, Black was again in a worse position, but White, unsuccessfully attacking, lost the advantage by the 40th moves, and the position became better for Black, but not so much that Anand could play to win. At the 44th move was a draw. A post-match computer analysis showed that in the case of White's move “22. LD2! ”, Which Topalov did not find at the board, Anand would have had more serious problems, but he could still get a draw.
Score in the match - 3: 2. Anand's minimum advantage is maintained.

Anand played the Catalan principle again, but Topalov, contrary to his wont (and the previous three games played by this debut in this match) did not take the victim in the fourth move. In the next game, Topalov clearly demonstrated homework, which was very well thought out and dangerous, but Anand managed to find ways of counteraction, equalized the game, and then even gained an advantage. Perhaps, at some point in the end, Topalov’s position was even losing, but Anand could not find a win. The result of the game is a draw.

The Slavic defense was played again in the same initial version as before. Commentators talked about the “confrontation between homework”: in their opinion, Topalov’s headquarters considered this start to be advantageous, while Anand’s headquarters was confident that it was possible to equalize chances, so no one shuns too early from the calculated path. But at the 22nd move, Anand made a frankly bad move f4, which allowed the opponent to effectively attack. Skillfully defending himself, Anand managed to completely neutralize the consequences of his mistake and achieve a draw position, but in it, at turn 54, when it remained only to strengthen the position of his king, he looked at the only possible enemy attack and made a gross mistake that led to defeat. At 56, Black resigned.

The ninth game of Anand, following the logic of the match struggle, was simply necessary to win. After all, even in the case of a draw, it turned out that the fate of the match will be decided in the remaining three games, two of which Topalov will play white. For Topalov, by the same logic, a draw in the ninth game was almost equivalent to winning. So the conditions themselves tuned in to an uncompromising struggle. So it happened. Suffice it to say that the game lasted 83 moves, that is, almost 1.5 times longer than the longest of the previously played games of this match.
Anand changed his debut, Nimzovich's defense was played out. White got a serious advantage and in the course of the game he repeatedly had a guaranteed win. However, each time due to the inaccurate moves of Anand and thanks to Topalov’s masterly defense technique, Black managed to escape. The party ended in a draw.
The score in the match remained equal - 4.5: 4.5.

The predictions for this game were cautious, but still the advantage was given to Topalov. After in the previous two games, Anand first lost in a drawn position, and then played a draw, with an undisputed win, the commentators talked about the champion's fatigue, that he clearly lacked the strength to play at full capacity. Topalov looked clearly fresher and more active.
Grunfeld defense was played, as in the first game of the match. Anand defended quite effectively, but on the 39th move he made a miscalculation, which could well lead to a loss. However, Topalov, in turn, made a mistake on the 44th move, having lost the advantage and came under the oncoming attack of Anand, as a result he was forced to defend himself, which, however, did quite successfully. The party ended in a draw.
Score in the match - 5: 5.

The eleventh game, first of all, pleased the audience with an increase in opening variety. For the first time in this match the English start was played. The whole game took place in approximately the same way: Anand actively crushed, Topalov defended himself. On the 40th moves, the game advantage for some time seemed to have passed to the challenger, but White, sacrificing a pawn for 49, again went on the offensive. However, Anand could not bring the matter to victory, the game ended in a draw.
The score in the match was 5.5: 5.5. There is only one game left from the main series, in which Topalov was to play white.

The situation for the last game of the main series was quite atypical: strictly speaking, none of the participants had a need to win. An equal score gave both players the opportunity to play a draw in an unfavorable course of the game to determine the winner in the tiebreak. On the other hand, Topalov, who has the worst results in fast chess, was perhaps more interested in ending the match without a tie-break. The fact that he was playing white in this game should have been an additional incentive for an active, offensive game.

After a dozen moves “according to the theory”, which generally equalized the position, Anand chose a rather rare continuation, leading to the fact that Black gets a more active position at the price of weakening the pawn chain. Such a position was formed after 22 moves. White's position was quite stable, he was only spoiled by the king who was not properly defended, to ensure the safety of which whites had to do something urgently. Over the next ten moves, Anand developed the offensive. Topalov successfully defended, until on the 32nd move he made an obviously losing move, giving Black the opportunity to capture the center. After this move, the game for White clearly “rolled over the slope”, and the task of black was only to bring it to an almost guaranteed victory. Immediately realizing the fatality of his mistake, Topalov, nevertheless, continued to actively defend himself, perhaps counting on the mistake of Anand. Anand, in turn, played cautiously, “with a double margin”, obviously most of all fearing to release a victory due to an oversight. However, the party did not bring any more surprises: Anand did not allow mistakes, Topalov’s defense was systematically destroyed, after 57 moves, White surrendered.
The score in the match was 6.5: 5.5 - Anand won in the main series, and therefore in the match, defending the title of world champion in chess.
