River map

The Swan River originates as the Avon River in the rolling hills of Western Australia south of the city of Corrijin . Subsequently, it proceeds first to the north-west and then to the south-west direction through the cities of North and Perth , falling into the Indian Ocean near the settlement of Fremantle . The length of the river is 360 km (it is known as the Swan River for 95 km). [1] The Swan River has several tributaries, the largest of which are the Avon, Helena and Canning rivers. Although there are no artificial barriers on the Swan River itself, its tributaries, Canning and Helena, are blocked by dams to regulate the catchment area and create reservoirs. In the summer and autumn months, the river usually dries out. [2]

The length of the Swan River is 280 km, the basin area is about 141,000 km².

History

The lower reaches of the river were first explored in 1697 by the Dutch traveler Willem de Flaming , who named it after the black swans who met him in the river (“Swan River” means “River of swans” in English). [1] For a long time, the western part of mainland Australia remained not colonized by European settlers. Only in 1826, due to the aggravated struggle with the French, the governor of New South Wales decided to organize an expedition to the area. During her course, James Sterling explored the Swan River and, marveling at the richness and grandeur of the region, began, along with the botanist Charles Fraser, to promote the idea of colonizing Western Australia. As a result, in 1829, it was decided to establish a colony on the Swan River . [3] That same year, Captain Charles Howe Fremantle ( Eng. Charles Howe Fremantle ) took possession of the lands around the river. A year later, Captain James Stirling officially founded the city of Perth and a colony on the Swan River. [4] In 1843, the construction of the first bridge across the river was completed in Perth. [one]
