Some Spirochaetes are causative agents of human and animal diseases. These are Leptospira , which causes leptospirosis , Treponema pallidum - the causative agent of syphilis , Borrelia recurrentis - the causative agent of relapsing fever , Treponema pertenue , Treponema carateum , Borrelia burgdorferi - the causative agent of Borreliosis in the USA, Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii and other pathogens in Russia.
Many are saprophytes : Spirochaeta plicatilis is an aqueous bacterium, Treponema microdentinum is one of the bacteria in the human oral cavity .
