Story
Vologda region , the period of perestroika . Kombiner Konstantin Smagin - one of the best machine operators of the Voskhod collective farm, is awarded by the administration for good work. Kostya gets drunk on the money received and, as a result of a domestic quarrel, breaks the gates of neighbors with an ax. The neighbors are ready to solve the matter peacefully, however, the journalist present at the same time writes a feuilleton in which he describes Smagin as a drunken rowdy, and accuses the local policeman Pukhov, who refused to start a case, of concealing the crime.
The case falls into the district prosecutor's office, where senior investigator Boris Matveevich enthusiastically takes up the case. Attempts by a neighbor, WWII veteran Ivan Stepanovich Sokolov, chairman of the collective farm and even secretary of the CPSU district committee to settle the matter are unsuccessful. Unexpectedly, help comes from a journalist in a regional newspaper, who before that wrote a laudatory article about a combine operator. Being preoccupied with his career, the journalist goes to the regional prosecutor’s office, from where the district investigator receives an order to dismiss the case. However, after learning that the collective farm chairman is being tried to be found guilty, Konstantin Smagin sets up a scandal at the investigator and again falls into the bullpen .
At the trial, taking into account all the facts, Konstantin is sentenced to forced labor at the place of residence, which, in principle, suits everyone. After the trial, Smagin tries to thank the journalist of the regional newspaper, but he tells the combine operator in an insulting manner that he will soon be back in jail. Sokolov is trying to intercede for a fellow villager, but now he is already in the police ...
