Blind date is a meeting of two people who have not met before and who are not at all familiar with each other. In a narrow sense, a blind date means a meeting in which none of the participants in the meeting saw before that photograph of another [1] [2] .
A blind date (in the modern sense) should be distinguished from the first meeting of future newlyweds within the framework of an “ arranged marriage, ” that is, a marriage arranged by parents without taking into account the views of their children. Arranged marriages often begin with a “blind” meeting of future bride and groom, who until this moment have never seen each other. Such marriages are still not uncommon in some countries.
Definition
Often, intermediaries between parties to a blind date are friends of one or both parties or dating agencies . But often this acquaintance arises on its own, for example, in Internet or SMS chats .
The purpose of such a meeting may be a romantic acquaintance. The erotic subtext inherent in the anticipation of just such types of dates makes these meetings especially attractive.
Since the parties involved in a blind date voluntarily agree to this type of contact, this usually means that they have a limited circle of partners. Long-term, social and genetic criteria for choosing a partner, sometimes even by their appearance, are highlighted or taken into account later on the basis of the “least common denominator”, that is, for the sake of the most spontaneous acquaintances. In practice, even when there is a choice of potential partners, often parties of such dates prefer to maintain an idealized image of the person with whom they are supposed to meet blindly, until the first moment they meet.
Like flirting , a meeting blindly fueled by sexual tension. However, due to the available choice of potential partners, one or both sides can use defensive tactics, rather than having to communicate and get to know each other more closely.
Blind meetings in culture and art
The theme of meetings blindly many times reflected in the cinema [en] [3] , for example:
