Mikhail Damaskin

Mikhail Damaskin ( Greek Μιχαήλ Δαμασκηνός ; 1530/1535 - 1592/1593 ) - icon painter , representative of the Cretan icon painting school . His icon-painting works belong to the Cretan Renaissance and had many imitators.

Michael was born in Heraklion . He studied icon painting in the courtyard of the Sinai Monastery in Crete. In 1574 he went to Venice to improve his skills. There, together with Emanuel Canes, he painted the Orthodox church of the city - the church of San Giorgio dei Greeks . In 1584 he returned to Greece, working mainly in Crete and the Ionian Islands .

The works of Mikhail Damaskin are stored in the museum of church art of Heraklion .
