History

The Italian Navy arose during the creation of the Italian armed forces after the unification of Italy .

During the Italo-Turkish war of 1911 - 1912 ships of the Italian navy provided the operations of expeditionary forces in North Africa.

In 1915 - 1918 The Italian fleet participated in the First World War.

The ships of the Italian fleet as part of the Entente forces participated in the intervention against Soviet Russia , during which the Italian destroyer Raccia was blown up and sank on July 21, 1920 at a Soviet mine barrier in the Black Sea [2] .

Purpose

In accordance with the directive of the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, the Italian naval forces are currently designed to ensure the integrity of the national territory, protect the interests of the country, NATO and the EU in various regions of the world, as well as to resolve international crises and perform specific tasks in natural disasters and other emergency situations requiring urgent intervention. The new tasks of the Italian fleet include: the fight against international terrorism in all its manifestations and participation in anti-crisis operations of various nature and scale. The current Italian naval strategy provides for the possibility of the presence of national naval forces both in the Mediterranean Sea , in the Red and Black Seas , as well as in the Indian Ocean .

Structure

In 2009, the Italian Navy, in addition to the fleet, includes 3 naval districts: Tyrrhenian (the district headquarters is located in the La Spezia naval base), Ionian (the district headquarters are located in the Taranto naval naval base) and the Adriatic (the district headquarters are located at the Ancona base), as well as 3 autonomous military -Navy command (Stolichnoe, the islands of Sicily and the islands of Sardinia ), as well as the 28th naval group in Albania (the place of deployment is the port of Vlore ).

Also in Italy there are several basing centers for ships and boats of the fleet: Venice , Ancona , Messina , Cagliari and La Maddalena .

The headquarters of the fleet is located in the Main Naval Base (GVMB) Taranto. The fleet includes six commands: Operational squadron (GVMB Taranto), landing ( Brindisi ), submarine (naval Taranto ), mine-sweeping (naval Naval Aviation Spezia ), patrol (naval naval Augusta ) forces and naval aviation ( Santa Rosa , Rome ) and training center, located in the Taranto naval base.

The command of the Operational squadron (whose headquarters are located on the Giuseppe Garibaldi AVL) includes the 1st and 2nd frigate divisions (8 URO frigates, 4 frigates and 2 training vessels), 2 aircraft carriers, 2 URO destroyers , 3 landing helicopter dock ship, training ship and 7 ocean tugs .

The submarine command includes 1 submarine brigade (7 submarines) and a submarine specialist training school.

The command of the landing forces includes the San Marco Marine Corps Regiment, the Marine Corps Logistics Support Regiment and the Landing Boats Division (9 boats for transporting equipment and 17 for transporting personnel).

The command of the mine-sweeping forces includes 2 mines of minesweepers (53rd and 54th), the control ship MTS "Alpino".

The command of naval aviation is subordinated to 3 air bases on which the squadron of aircraft with short take-off and landing of the AV-8B and 5 helicopter squadrons are based. The base patrol aviation of the Navy (14 aircraft) is organizationally part of the Italian Air Force . For operational use, she reports directly to the fleet commander.
