Mitchell, John Cameron

John Cameron Mitchell was born in El Paso , Texas , in the family of a retired Major General of the US Army. His mother is from Glasgow , Scotland , who emigrated to the United States as a young teacher. He grew up on military bases in the United States, Germany and Scotland. Already in childhood, while studying in a Catholic school, he showed interest in the theater.

From 1981 to 1985, he studied theater at Northwestern University . Since 1985, begins to play on the stages of Broadway , starring in episodic roles in television and film. He was nominated for the theater awards " Drama Desk " and " Obie Award ". In 1985, Mitchell came out as a gay in front of loved ones ^[1] .

In 1998, he wrote (together with composer Stephen Trask) and staged the musical “Hedwig and the Unhappy Inch”, which won the prestigious Obie Award . Three years later, based on his screenplay, he shoots a film that won the Best Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Golden Globe . After this success, Mitchell is interested in making movies. In 2003, he acts as a producer for the film " The Curse ." In 2005, he shoots clips for the Bright Eyes and Scissor Sisters . In 2006, the film “Shortbus” was released , which won numerous awards at various international film forums. In 2010 he released his film " Rabbit Hole ".

John Cameron Mitchell supported the International LGBT Film Festival "Side by Side" and was a special guest during his underground show.
