Player Career
For 14 years, Bu Johansson played for the Swedish clubs Kalmar and Lindsdal, but as a player he did not gain wide fame. In 1973-1976 he was a playing coach.
Coaching career
In 1977, he ended his career as a player and was appointed coach of his former Kalmar club, and two years later he began to train his eternal principal rival in the Swedish championship - the Esther club from Veksjo . He stayed at Esther for three years, during which the club twice (in 1980 and 1981) became the champion of Sweden. Then Johansson coached the Norwegian club “ Herv ”, again “Esther”, and the Greek “ Panionios ”, after which he began working with national teams, leading the team of Iceland . Only 13 years after his success at Esther, he won his next title: the Danish club Silkeborg , which he led, became the champion of Denmark in 1994.
In 1996, he was appointed head coach of the Danish team , after the resignation of Richard Möller-Nielsen , under whose leadership the team won the 1992 European Championships , but after that showed very modest results. Bu Johansson offered the team a more attacking style of play and managed to lead the team to the finals of the 1998 World Cup in France , which became one of the most high-profile successes of the Danes on the international stage. Despite the loss in the group stage to the hosts and future winners of the tournament - the French team , the Danes left the group in the 1/8 finals, where they demonstrated spectacular and productive football; they defeated the Nigeria national team with a score of 4: 1, but in the quarterfinal they lost 2: 3 to the future silver medalists of the tournament - the Brazilian national team .
Unfortunately, the Danish team did not manage to maintain their uniform and high level of play, and two years later at the 2000 European Championships in Belgium and the Netherlands, they made an unsuccessful performance, losing all group matches and not getting into the playoffs . During the tournament, Johansson announced his intention not to renew the contract with the Danish team at the end of the championship. In total, with the Danish national team, Johansson spent 40 matches, in which there were 17 wins, 9 draws and 14 losses. [2]
Over the next three years, Johansson did not engage in coaching. In 2003, he headed the Swedish club Gothenburg , where he worked until 2004. In 2005, he headed the Norwegian Molde , which led to the victory in the Norwegian Cup .
