Story
The action takes place mainly in the Australian state of Victoria , in the town of Echuka ( eng. Echuca ), on the Murray River in the 90s of the 19th century. The ship, on which a young Englishwoman Philadelphia Gordon ( Sigrid Thornton ) goes with her parents to Australia in search of a better life, is wrecked. The orphaned Philadelphia - diminutively Delhi - settles on the farm of his aunt in the vicinity of Echuki. In the house of her aunt, she meets her cousin - Edam. There are friendships between young people. Edam's parents, and especially his mother, encourage their communication in every way - after all, Delhi is a profitable bride, the inheritance from her parents is 3000 pounds. However, in Australia after a while a banking crisis occurs and Philadelphia loses almost all the money. The only thing left for her is 100 pounds, which she managed to remove to help the sailor who once saved her during a shipwreck - Tom, who currently owns the paddle steamer, but things are going very badly. Despite the fact that circumstances have seriously changed, Delhi gives the promised money. Tom agrees to take them, but not in debt, but on the terms of investing in business. So Delhi becomes the co-owner of the steamer, which is soon renamed in her honor - "Philadelphia". Meanwhile, Edam's mother changes his mind about the possible marriage of Delhi and Edam - after all, Delhi has been ravaged and even the last money has been wasted. And in the meantime, Edam begins to more closely communicate with another girl - the daughter of rich parents, who were little affected by the crisis. Suddenly comes the tragic denouement. On a festive evening, where Delhi and Edam went together, Delhi enjoyed overwhelming success with all men. Heated with jealousy and alcohol, Edam drags Delhi into one and the rooms and offers Delhi to make love to him right now. Shocked Delhi resolutely refuses and chases him away. Having received a sharp refusal, a young man in an insane-violent state rushes to the harnessed stagecoach, drives the horses home at full speed and crashes at full speed along the road. Out of grief, an aunt with hatred blames Delhi for what happened, allegedly playing with the feelings of her son, giving him hope and then rejecting his love. All are compassionate mothers who have lost their only son, consider Delhi to be the murderer of the budding young man. With a gloomy shadow on her good name, Delhi is forced to leave her aunt's house. In the meantime, her companion, Tom, is doing nothing at all. In the end, he decides to sell his share to his assistant Brenton Edwards. Delhi decides to come to grips with the overall business. At the same time, she has to constantly communicate with a new partner - an attractive, but independent-freedom-loving. As they communicate, Delhi’s attitude towards Brenton changes: if at first he caused a sharp dislike in her, now he likes it more and more. Delhi marries Brenton and abandons the artist's career in Melbourne for the sake of living and traveling along the river on a steamer. However, life is constantly flowing and changing, as all the rivers of Australia are flowing, and the marriage of Delhi and Brenton will undergo a lot of tests, both material and personal. The rejection by others, especially the “rivermen”, of Delhi as a business woman and hostess of the steamer, unfair rivalry of other shipowners, failure in business, breakage of the steamer, disbelief in their own strength and the need to overcome it for the sake of their future and the future of close people - a young woman passes through it . When things get better, there comes a personal crisis in the relationship between Delhi and Brenton, who is not easy parting with his former independence and getting used to the status of a family man, husband and father. In a young family, a son is born, but then Delhi and Brenton break up. He is looking for happiness in the former freedom, and she, being very capable of painting, goes to study in Melbourne. In Melbourne, Philadelphia finds new friends and its social circle, which is much more suitable for it by birth, upbringing and character. Delhi is faced with a difficult choice to forget about the past on the rivers of Australia and remain in Melbourne as a successful artist, linking fate with a sincere love for her, a worthy person who appreciates her talent, or return to her first love and father of her child - Brenton, who in separation realized that only delhi loves. Friends persuade Delhi not to ruin themselves and their talent of the artist among simple Australian “rivermen”, with whom she was brought together in the difficult years of her youth. But Philadelphia and his son returned to Brenton. Their love, purified by trials, and their fate will henceforth be fully associated with the rivers of Australia, which always flow.
