Rufus ( Greek Ρούφος , lat. Rufus ) is an apostle from among seventy , the son of Simon of Cyrene , who carried the cross of Jesus Christ ( Mark 15:21 ).

Usually this Rufus is taken for the same person as Rufus, mentioned by the apostle Paul in the epistle to the Romans . The apostle writes about him: “ Salute Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine ” ( Rom. 16:13 ). According to legend, Rufus was a bishop in Thebes in Greece . Lucius Dextor reports that Rufus was a bishop in Spain in Catalonia and the Spaniards consider him their apostle. [one]
The memory of the Apostle Rufus is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on April 21 ( April 8 according to the old style) and January 17 (January 4 according to the old style) on the day of the Council of the Apostles from seventy.
