Story

Computer genius Cohen Lat all his life awaits a divine phone call, which should tell him about the meaning of life and special purpose. In order not to miss the call, Cohen urges management to allow him to work at home. Cohen lives in an old dilapidated temple . The guide gives Cohen a breathtakingly challenging task - the “Zero Theorem”, on the solution of which many scientists went crazy. The decision becomes so difficult that Lat burst with patience and he quits his job. To inspire the hard worker, the manual sends a paid virtual stripper, Bannsley. The girl fascinates Cohen with the virtual worlds , which in turn reduces the performance . To this end, the guide sends his son Bob to monitor and improve the work process. Bob is extremely honest with Cohen, says that Bainsley, a psychologist , and whoever is there, are all bought by the management of Mancom to achieve a result on solving the theorem. The theorem itself, as it turns out, must prove that all living things happened as a result of a ridiculous mistake. It turns out that Cohen, waiting for the call of God , spends all his time working on the proof that there is no God. Cohen, fully cornered, connects to a world wide server using a virtual suit presented to him by Bainsley. Having merged with data storage, Cohen meets there the management. There it becomes clear to him that all his life, wanting to find out about his purpose, he — Cohen Lat — spent locked away, doing nothing. But the Zero Theorem is generally unprovable. Although recently, within the framework of a new cosmology, an attempt has been made to solve this theorem [4]

Creation

The film script was written by Pat Rashin.

Making the film began in May 2009, but in July 2009, Gilliam refused to shoot, saying that the work on the films “ Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ” and “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote ” took longer than he expected. [10]

But then it became known that the film will still be shot and the main role will be performed by Christoph Waltz . The director himself wrote about this on his Facebook page .

Preparation for work on the film began in Romania. Directly to the shooting Gilliam intended to begin November 22, 2012. Waltz also acted as one of the producers of the project [11] .

The main role in the film could be played by Billy Bob Thornton [12] .

  • The name of the protagonist - Qohen Leth - is a pun on Qoheleth (the name of Ecclesiastes in Hebrew) and a Cohen (Jewish priest).
  • The film presents several parody cults created by the consumer society in search of the meaning of life, such as the “Church of Batman the Redeemer” and “The Church of Smart Design”.

Criticism

According to A. Gaginsky, instead of the second “Brazil” , with which the film was compared before the release, Gilliam turned out to be “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ” in cyberpunk scenery [13] .
