Biography
The son of an officer. Since 1878 he studied in Paris with Emil Ben , then entered the Academy of Fine Arts with Alexander Cabanel . In 1882 - 1897 he taught drawing in Parisian educational institutions. In 1889 , at the World Exhibition in Paris, he was awarded a bronze medal for the painting “Mother (I Sleep, but my heart is awake)” ( French La Mère , Latin Dormio cor meum vigilat ). At the World Exhibition in 1900 , he received a gold medal for his work in the technique of lithography .
Along with portraiture, he dealt a lot with caricature and cartoon , in 1904 he founded the Society of Comedy Artists ( French Société des Peintres Humoristes ). Leander's works in this genre were published in leading French newspapers, including Figaro , and in specialized satirical publications, including the magazine Laughter ( Le Rire ); not all of these works were benevolent in nature. He also acted as an illustrator - his illustrations for " Madame Bovary " by Gustave Flaubert were especially famous.
