Geography and culture
Ascona lies on the north-west coast of Lake Maggiore , near the mouth of the river Maggio , in close proximity to the border with Italy . It is located at an altitude of 196 meters above sea level.
In the first half of the 20th century, the Monte Verità hill, on which Ascona is located, played a special role in the cultural life of Europe . Here, from all over the continent and from America, utopians and various “improvers of the world” were gathered, speeches were held, lectures were given and ideas about establishing a kingdom of love, freedom, vegetarianism and public property were expressed. Anarchists were especially active [1] .
Every year in Ascona, the famous Novo-Orleans jazz festival takes place in summer.
In the 1980s, a car tunnel was laid under the Monte Veritas to protect the old center of Ascona from numerous transit and tourist vehicles.
