Biography

Like his younger brother, Hans, Ambrosius was born in Augsburg (in modern Bavaria ), which at that time was a free imperial city , as well as a center of art, culture and trade. Father, Hans Holbein the Elder was an innovator and pioneer in transforming the technique of German painting during the transition from Gothic to the Renaissance . In his workshop, both his sons, Ambrosius and Hans, received the first painting lessons, and also got acquainted with jewelry and engraving craftsmanship .

In 1515 Ambrosius lived in the Swiss city of Stein am Rhein , where he worked as an apprentice in the workshop of Hans Horbst [1] on frescoes in the main hall of the monastery of St. George .

In 1517 he was enrolled in the guild of painters of Basel , and in 1518 he was naturalized as a citizen of this city. In Basel, he shared a workshop with his younger brother Hans. They had many small orders for engravings from book publishers in Basel, as well as portraits and paintings of religious content.

Ambrosius Holbein died, presumably around 1519.
