Biography

Gregory came from a clan of the Galich boyars of the Lopotovs. At 15, his parents wanted to combine him with marriage, but they died before they had time to fulfill the plan. Gregory left the estate inherited by him, and took tonsure at the Mother of God-Nativity Monastery near Lake Galich . Later he was ordained a hieromonk and became hegumen and was respected by the inhabitants of the city and Prince Yuri Dmitrievich .

Weighed down by fame, Gregory left this monastery and went to Rostov to worship local shrines. There he remained in the Abraham monastery , and later became the archimandrite of the Spassky monastery in Sands . For two years he managed the monastery, and then secretly left Rostov at night and came to the Monk Dionysius Glushitsky and became his disciple.

At the age of 104, Gregory left Dionysius and came to the banks of the Pelshma River and set his cell there . Soon Gregory was joined by priest Alexy, whom he tonsured as a monk with the name Alexander. Later, other ascetics appeared and Gregory received a blessing from the Rostov bishop Ephraim for the construction of the monastery. He built a church in honor of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The monastery of Gregory became known and he received universal respect. In 1433, in Moscow , he exhorted Prince Yuri Dmitrievich to return the usurped throne to Grand Prince Vasily II .

Gregory died at the age of 127 years. Anticipating death, he came to his confessor Barsanuphius, confessed and communed . Dying, he asked to throw his body into the swamp , but the disciples, honoring him, transferred the body of Gregory to the monastery he founded and buried in the church.

In 1683, the church was destroyed by fire and a chapel was erected over the grave of Gregory. In 1706, it was replaced by a wooden church, consecrated in the name of St. Gregory, in which the relics continued to be hidden. In 1810 a cancer was placed over them, in which the saint’s iron chains were placed. In 1833, the wooden building was replaced by a stone one. In 1926, the Pelsham monastery was closed. The temple, in which the relics of the monk were stored, is currently in ruins, the relics are not found and rest in hiding.
