Biography
Jan Wondroush was born on January 24, 1884 in the Czech village of Khotusice near the town of Caslav . In 1893, he emigrated with his parents to the United States . Here he received an art education, having studied for four years with at the National School of Design (now the National Academy of Design ) in New York and graduated from an etching school. In the future, J. Vondroush worked for several years as an illustrator in American weeklies.
In 1910, Jan moved to Prague . Here, the artist created a number of engravings, etchings and other graphic works, primarily with motives of urban architecture. His first engravings, depicting mainly the architecture of New York and its environs, were published during the First World War . At the end of the war, Jan Wondroush traveled around Europe for about ten years, engraving the architectural landscapes of large European cities. The artist devoted especially many works to Bruges and Venice . At the same time, J. Wondroush maintained a house and workshop in Long Island . In 1929, the artist returned to Prague and over the following years he engraved and painted people and the architecture of this city.
Etchings by Jan Vondrush won medals at international exhibitions . He was a member of the , the Chicago and . The artist's works are in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague, the Chicago Institute of Art, the Library of Congress in Washington , the Smithsonian Museum of American Art , the New York Public Library , the Berlin Engraving Office and the British Victoria and Albert Museum .
Jan Vondroush died on June 28, 1970 in Prague.
Creating Stamps
Jan Vondroush is the author of several postage stamps of Czechoslovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. He made his debut in this capacity in 1937, having prepared for the Czechoslovak post drawings of stamps of the Malaya Ententa series ( Mi # 375-376) . A stamp from this series was reproduced in the Czech miniature “Traditions of Czech stamps design” ( Mi # 346) , released in January 2003 .
