From the review of Fazil Iskander on the book of Mandelstam Street by Yuri Kuvaldin:
“The book of Yuri Kuvaldin“ Mandelstam Street ”(a collection of short stories) is precisely a book in the most exact sense of the word. With the outwardly diverse material of it, we constantly feel its internal unity. Its unity is that in the world of thoughts the author feels at home and wants us to feel the same here, however, we didn’t loose our belts too much, and the author himself is sufficiently tightened with proper hospitality.
In a word, this is real intellectual, or rather, intelligent prose. Kuvaldin does not succumb to either the waves of hasty and transient literary trends, nor the hectic “passing” reasoning about the “good hero”. This to a large extent explains the trust that you have in reading his stories, because in the work of every real writer, not only the system of his moral, philosophical, aesthetic values is important, but also the consistency, perseverance, passion in upholding them.
Kuvaldin has no interest in people of easy fate. He loves to peer at the “complex” heroes, tells the truth about them, for the most part heavy and sad, drawn from life itself, where the positive and negative go hand in hand. With his stories, Yuri Kuvaldin not only reports new things - he, creating himself, learns something new and unexpected for himself, and his style always bears the imprint of this excitement of the discoverer ” [3] .
Eugene Rein “Kuvaldin is a special person”: “Of course, Yuri Kuvaldin is a special, exceptional person. And this is what should be noted when speaking about him and his activities. This is an extremely rare case in literature.
All of us, creative, writing people, are selfish.
We all, in general, think about ourselves, and rarely when we find strength to help our comrades, to participate in their fates.
Yuri Kuvaldin in this sense is some remarkable exception. Besides the fact that he, in my opinion, is a very gifted prose writer, I have read many of his works and highly appreciate them ... but he is also the editor-in-chief of Our Street magazine and the publisher.
And I would like to note that he devoted a huge amount of energy and attention to his publishing business, both magazine and book.
Here is his magazine “Our Street” and the publishing house “Book Garden”. [3]
