High-voltage direct current line Basslink

HVDC basslink map.svg

Basslink is a high-voltage direct current line ( HVDC ) laid across the Bass Strait and connecting the Loy Young power station on the Australian continent with a substation in Tasmanian Georgetown. The cable also includes a telecommunication component - fiber optic cable. The line is owned by CitySpring Infrastructure Trust .

History

The construction of the line was started in 2004 and was carried out by a consortium of Siemens AG and Prysmian . One of the main contractors, Siemens AG, supplied eight high-voltage 196 MVA DC transformers, as well as other equipment for substations. The Italian company Prysmian (formerly Pirelli Energy Cables & Systems) supplied cable products. [1] The total amount of the contract exceeded 30 million euros. [2]

Basslink Pty Ltd became a subsidiary of National Grid Australia Pty Ltd , which in turn is a subsidiary of the British National Grid plc .

December 1, 2005 , the testing procedure for the Basslink line began . On April 29, 2006 the line was put into commercial operation. [3]

On August 31, 2007, Cityspring Infrastructure Trust , a wholly owned subsidiary of Temasek , completed the acquisition of Basslink for A $ 1.75 billion.

Overview

Basslink is a monopolar high-voltage direct current line operating at a nominal voltage = 400 kV. The line's rated power is 500 mega watts , although the line is capable of transmitting 630 MW for four hours.

The cable includes:

  • 290 kilometers of underwater marine power cable. The weight of the cable is 60 kg / m. [4] This is the second longest underwater power cable in the world. (see also NorNed )
  • 60.8 kilometers of the airline in Victoria
  • 6.6 kilometers of underground line in Victoria
  • 11 kilometers of air line in Tasmania
  • 1.7 kilometers of the underground line in Tasmania.

Communication cable

The Basslink line also contains a telecommunication cable - the so-called dark fiber .
