History
Start of construction in 1845 , consecrated in June 1848 . It is located in the city center on the main street at Rigas 39 . The building was originally crowned by a square tower . In 1920 - 30 years of the XX century, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, a dome was built over the building, a colonnade goes from the main entrance to the right and left, it is closed by two-story wings . The temple after reconstruction resembles a smaller St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican .
In June 1941, a bomb fell in front of the main entrance, damaging the facade and roof of the church (a photograph is available in the Daugavpils Museum ). After the war, believers corrected the destruction. In the early 60s, they wanted to demolish the temple, but believers turned to the Vatican for support, and the temple was defended.
The temple is part of the Rezekne-Aglona bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church of Latvia. Since 1980, the rector of the church is Alexander Madelans. The temple was repeatedly visited by Bishop Janis Bulis , head of the Rezekne-Aglona diocese . A few years ago, a small detached bell tower was built. The bell was presented by Rector A. Madelans .
