Geography
The Goler Mountains are one of the oldest volcanic formations in the world: they appeared about 1.5 billion years ago [1] . In some places there are extensive outcrops of volcanic rhyolite , which in shape resemble organ pipes. The mountains extend from east to west for 160 km, from the northern part of the Eyre Peninsula to the southern shore of Lake Gerdner . The highest point, Mount Newki Bluff , reaches 465 m [2] . In the eastern part of Goler there are rich deposits of iron ore , which have been mined since the beginning of the 20th century . The climate in the mountains varies. The average annual rainfall is 295 mm. The maximum daily temperature is 34 ° C in summer and 19 ° C in winter.
126 species of birds live in the mountains (including Emu , Australian wedge-tailed eagle , Inca cockatoo ), three of the five species of kangaroos , wombats , and posums (a total of 18 species of mammals, 3 species of frogs, 33 species of reptiles), 225 species of plants [ 2] .
History
The English explorer Edward John Eyre , who discovered it in 1839 and named after the colonial governor of South Australia , George Goler, became the European discoverer of the ridge [3] . After 18 years, the Goler Mountains were studied by Stephen Hack , and in 1857, the first lease for the organization of pasture was concluded [4] .
There are several historical sites on the territory of the mountains, including the Yantanabie Historic Reserve and the Yardea National Estate .
