Biography

Adoration of the Magi . The central part of the tricuspid altar. Koln

He worked in Cologne from the beginning of the 1430s. It is considered by art historians as the main master of the Cologne school . The artists of this school are characterized by lyricism and gentleness in interpreting images of scripture .

Lochner followed in the footsteps of the founder of the school, master Wilhelm, with whom he was equal in depth of expression of religious feeling and in cute naivety, and which he surpassed in regard to the power of modeling and colors. His main and undoubted work is the famous altarpiece in the Cologne Cathedral with the images of “Adoration of the Magi” on the middle board and scenes from the life of St. Gereon and St. Ursulas on lateral valves (written after 1426). Probably he owns the “Mother of God in the Arbor of Roses”, located in the Cologne Museum of Wallraf-Richartz , and the “ Meeting of the Lord ” (1447) in the Darmstadt Gallery.

In 1447, Lochner became a member of the City Council of Cologne [1] .
