A retronym is a new name or a name that has been changed after the original name was used for another item or for the totality of a new item and a previously existing one.
So, the name “acoustic guitar”, which appeared after the invention of the electric guitar , is a retronym: now the word “ guitar ” means both electric and acoustic versions of the instrument, before it meant only acoustic guitar, since there were no other guitars.
The term “ First World War ” appeared only after the Second World War , before it the First World War was called the “Great War” or “Imperialist”, and other names were used.
Similarly, before the invention of floppy disks , a hard disk was simply called a “disk,” field hockey was simply called hockey . Postscript received the comment “Level 1” after the release of the Level 2 version. The car’s gearbox was called mechanical because automatic gearboxes were used. The computer mouse has become “mechanical” with the advent of optical mice. The original version of cinema is now known as " silent cinema " - this happened with the development of technology for recording soundtracks on film.
Another example of a retronym is the 41st US President George W. Bush , now called George HW Bush (George Herbert Walker Bush), so as not to be confused with his son .
