Josephine Mexeper's photographs and installations reveal the links between politics and the world of fashion consumption and advertising . The artist grew up in an artistic family with left-wing radical views (her father, the artist Friedrich Mexeper, was an anarchist , and her mother was a representative of the Green Party ). Josephine Mexeper often uses shop windows and store shelves, turning an art gallery into a kind of store: a cultural arena where aesthetics mix with ideology , politics and axioms of life. Conceived as a showcase in Chelsea’s New York area, I Love Jesus uses images of political protest , mixes them with trinkets, home cleaning products and the “Sorry for our appearance” sign. The Complete History of Postcontemporary Art (2005) also combines everyday objects and images of protest. By deconstructing the strategy of the mass media to mix advertising and editorial materials, the artist explores how we become consumers not only of products, but also of news and politics. For one of her last exhibitions in New York , Josephine Mexeper turned the gallery into a weird store in which the goods are surrounded by political slogans and refer to the US presidential election. The huge black and white US flag on the walls focused the viewer's attention on the center of the exposition, where Ten High (inaccessible link) (2008) was located - a brilliant platform with various objects, including silver mannequins, a bottle of whiskey, a bible and other classic American symbols . The assemblies , which the artist began to create in 2000, parody the display of shop windows. Combining fashion and political protest, Mexeper analyzes the hidden links between consumer society, the politics of power, and the mechanism of desire. Mexeper often uses the language of advertising and propaganda, in her latest video “0% Down” (2008) uses video from car ads.
