Virgilius Čepaitis ( Virgilius Čepaitis [1] , Virgilijus Juozas Čepaitis ; lit. Virgilijus Čepaitis , November 8, 1937 , Sakiai ) is a Lithuanian translator, public and political figure.

Biography
Born in Sakiai. He graduated from the Kaunas Pedagogical School ( 1954 ). In 1955 - 1956 he worked as a translator in the editorial office of the newspaper "Komyaunimo tesa" ( " Komjaunimo tiesa " ; "Komsomolskaya Pravda"). In the direction of the Writers' Union of the Lithuanian SSR, he studied at the Translation Department at the Literary Institute. A. M. Gorky in Moscow ; graduated in 1961 . He was married to Natalia Trauberg (their children - Thomas Chepaytis and Maria Chepaytite - translators), the second marriage on the ethnologist Auksuole Chepaytene.
Since 1958, he collaborated with various publishing houses of Lithuania and Russia , translating books from English and Russian into Lithuanian and from Polish into Russian. Since 1968, a member of the Lithuanian Writers' Union , since 2003 - the Lithuanian Translators Union . From 1988 to 1989, he worked as the chief editor of the creative association Ars of the Lithuanian Film Studio .
In the summer of 1988 he entered the Sajudis Initiative Group. He was elected to the Sajudis Council; Executive Secretary of the Sayudis Council from 1989-1990 . In 1989-1990, a member of the Baltic Council. Chairman of the S. Shalkauskis Foundation (1989–1992), the Society of Lithuania — Poland ( 1989–1994 ), the Independence Party (1990–1992). In 1990–1992 , he was a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR (Restorative Diet), which proclaimed the restoration of Lithuanian independence.
After the dossier on the agent of the KGB of the USSR “Juozas” was made public, he was forced to leave parliament and withdraw from active participation in public and political life. [2]
Since 1993, the editor-in-chief of the publishing house Litterae universitatis , since 1996 the director of the publishing house Tvermė .
In 2000, the President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, presented V. Chepaytis with the Lithuanian Independence Medal .
Translation Activities
Fiction translator made his debut translation of Winnie the Pooh in 1958 , translating A. A. Milne’s book from Polish into Irena Tuwim’s translation (later Čepaitis again did the English translation) [3] . Translated a number of works for children from English and Russian.
He was a very productive translator of Lithuanian prose into Russian. Co-writer of the movie "Virto ąžuolai" ( 1976 ). The author of the book of memoirs about his participation in the events of 1988-1990 “With Sajudis for Lithuania” ( “Su S ( jūdžiu už Lietuvą. Nuo 1988 06 03 iki 1990 03 11” , Vilnius: Tvermė, 2007 ). Since the mid-1990s, editor and co-author of a series of historical adventure books of the publishing house "Skomantas" .
