The lighthouse was built in 1791 , becoming the first lighthouse in Australia. The structure was wooden and served until 1816 , when the then Governor of New South Wales, Laclan Macquarie, laid the first stone of the new lighthouse building. [3] However, the modern building was only built in 1878-1880 near the old one, and the old one was demolished in 1883 . Then the lighthouse was opened in a new building, existing to this day. [4] The old and new buildings are very similar in appearance, and for more than two years they stood side by side a few meters.
In 1933, a double- wing Fresnel lens was installed on the lighthouse. Since 1976, the lighthouse has been fully automatic. Since 2001, the lighthouse has been managed by the Sydney Harbor Federation Trust . [five]
The lighthouse is a symbol of Macquarie University , depicted on its logo.
