History

Before the emergence of the city, the Nikolo-Medvedsky Monastery ( aka Nikolo-Medvedovsky, Nikolsky-Medvedovsky ), which arose in the XIV or XV century, was located at this place. 15 km higher along the river is the village of Staraya Ladoga , according to archaeological data - the ancient city of Russia (and the possible capital of the state of Rurik ).

In 1702, by order of Tsar Peter I , during the Northern War, the territory of the Nikolo-Medvedsky Monastery was surrounded by an earthen rampart and a moat, and a shipyard was created at the mouth of Volkhov. On April 13, 1704, the king ordered the ships from neighboring shipyards on the Syas and Svir rivers to be sent here for a sample. About 2 thousand workers were brought from Beloozero , Poshekhonya , Olonets and Kargopol .

In 1704, by the decree of Peter I, the city of Novaya Ladoga was founded, after which the ancient city of Ladoga became known as Staraya Ladoga. Here, the king ordered many Old Ladies to move, and from the center of the country ordered the transfer of several regiments of infantry [2] . In 1719, by decree of the tsar, the construction of the Ladoga Canal (the so-called old Petrovsky) was begun.

Since the middle of the 18th century, Novaya Ladoga has been the center of the Novoladozh district of the St. Petersburg province. In 1763-1769, the future generalissimo A. V. Suvorov commanded the Suzdal Infantry Regiment in Novaya Ladoga, where he composed the " Regimental Institution " (1764-1765) - an instruction containing the main provisions and rules for the education of soldiers, internal service and combat training of troops.

NEW LADOGA - a county town (with the settlement of Zagorodye and the village of Krenitsy) at the Volkhov River and Ladoga Canal, at the junction of the three water communication systems of St. Petersburg with the internal provinces;
from St. Petersburg - 148 miles, from Moscow - 752 miles, the number of houses - 1096, the number of inhabitants: 2013 m., 1997 f. P.;
Orthodox churches are six. County school with a parish class. The hospital is alone. Almshouse alone. Two fairs. Telegraph station. (1862) [3]

In 1861-1866, a new, deeper channel, Novoladozhsky , was dug parallel to the old Petrovsky Canal along the very shore of Lake Ladoga .

In 1930, a fishing collective farm named after Kalinin was created in New Ladoga [4] .

During the Great Patriotic War, the city played a huge role in supporting communications with the besieged Leningrad along the legendary Road of Life , and also as one of the locations of the Red Banner Ladoga Flotilla .

According to 1990 data, 5 settlements, villages: Dubno, Kivgoda, Krenitsa, Ligovo and Sumskoye were administratively subordinate to the Novoladozh City Council [5] .

Geography

The city is located in the northern part of the district at the beginning of the A115 highway , north of the intersection of the P21 ( E 105 ) Kola and A114 Novaya Ladoga-Vologda highways, 26 km from the regional center of the city of Volkhov and 138 km from St. Petersburg [ 6] [7] .

The city is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River , at the place where it flows into Lake Ladoga .

The city center is occupied by a triangular island, bounded in the north by the old Petrovsky Canal , from the southeast by the Volkhov River, from the west by the sleeve of the same Petrovsky Canal, which connects to the river.
