Story
In the center of the plot are four friends of acquaintances from childhood. Henry Devlin ( Thomas Jane ), a psychiatrist (whose patient recently committed suicide), from the suicide of which Jonesy's call ( Damien Lewis ) saves. Joe "The Beaver" Clarendan ( Jason Lee ) asking Jonesy to be careful. That does not save the latter and he still gets under the car, because it seems to him that he sees a little boy on the other side of the road, whose name is Duddits ( Donnie Wahlberg ) and he again calls for his help, as once in childhood . Pete Moore ( Timothy Olyphant ), a car salesman who, like Beaver, doesn’t have a personal life, trying to get to know women, he only scares them away.
It takes about six months, Jonesy miraculously survived after a heart failure, he and his friends go to a small hunting lodge , where they go every year to hunt and chat heart to heart. During the hunt, Jonesy sees a man wandering through the forest, who calls himself Rick McCarthy. It turns out that he was lost and Jonesy invites him to the house, where Beaver soon returns, they feed Rick and put him to bed, while Henry and Pete see a woman sitting on the road on the way from the store, and then they have an accident, trying to go round her. Meanwhile, Jonesy and Beaver see animals running away from something, many of them have red marks on their bodies - the same as on the neck of their guest Rick. Helicopters arrive, they hover above the ground, and its pilots warn that the territory is under quarantine. Jonesy and Beaver returned to check on Rick, but they see that his bed is in blood and from there a bloody trail stretches into the bathroom. A large worm rips Rick's ass and falls into the toilet, friends slam the lid and Jonesy runs after scotch tape or rope into the barn, but at this time the worm breaks out and kills Beaver in front of Jonesy's eyes, he hardly manages to close the door and, turning around, sees a tall man in front of him a gray humanoid with a large head and long arms, which suddenly turns into a cloud of red dust and inhabits Jonesy.
Meanwhile, Henry and Pete were separated, it turned out that the woman was alive, and Pete injured his leg, so Henry walks to their house. Pete poisons stories and drinks, not noticing the death of a woman from whom a worm crawls out and walks around him from the rear, attacking him while Pete relieves his need. He barely saves his life. Jonesy leaves the house, gets on the snowmobile and leaves. On the way, Henry stumbles upon Jonesy. Jonesy warns Henry of the danger through telepathy, and he hides in a snowdrift; Jonesy calls the name of the distant guest, Mr. Gray. Jonesy stumbles upon a wounded Pete and makes him show him the way. Returning to the hunting lodge, Henry discovers Beaver's body and a strange substance throughout the house, a certain fungus. Then he sees the worm that killed Beaver, and shoots him with a gun, sets fire to the whole house and goes skiing.
The military set up a nearby camp, where people from all over the area are transported, the commander is Colonel Abraham Curtis ( Morgan Freeman ). The colonel and his right hand, Captain Owen ( Tom Sizemore ), take off by helicopters, find a large alien ship that reports that they crashed and are not contagious. The military attack them, shooting with machine guns and rocket launchers, the creatures retreat, changing the appearance of aliens with gray skin to giant worms. Aliens themselves destroy their ship, but several helicopter pilots die with it. Henry is caught in the forest, and in the camp he meets Owen. Henry convinces him not to allow the killing of civilians, to call the units of the national guard. Owen and Henry flee the camp, but the Colonel sets off in pursuit of them in a helicopter.
Jonesy is trying to hide his memories from Mr. Gray, destroying his archive of memories, the part that tells about Duddits. Henry and Owen find Duddits, he turns out to be a 35-year-old male patient with leukemia with mental disabilities. They pick him up and he helps them find Jonesy. Now Mr. Gray knows who warned him and taught his friends their tricks. He gets to a wastewater treatment plant in Massachusetts, wanting to infect a source, and friends arrive there too. Owen is mortally wounded by Curtis, who arrives, but Owen hits a helicopter and Curtis crashes. Henry is forced to take up arms and follow Jonesy, meeting him he does not believe him. Suddenly Duddits appears and greets Mr. Gray, he leaves Jonesy's body and attacks Duddits, who turns into a similar creature and kills Mr. Gray and dies himself, leaving his friends alone. At the last moment, they recall the prophecy “One worm will destroy the whole world” and kill a small worm that almost fell into the well.

Script
| “ | I really don't like Dream Catcher. It was written after an accident. I took a lot of oxycontin to fight the pain. And I could not work for a long time on the computer, as it was too painful for me to sit in that position. For this reason, I wrote a novel for a very long time. I was pretty frustrated when I wrote this because of hydroxy, and this is another book that shows what happens when you use drugs at work. [20] [21] . | ” |
- Stephen King , author of the novel of the same name
According to Stephen King , even he did not like Dream Catcher , because when he wrote it, he was under the influence of oxycontin, [2] [22] which he began to use after the accident in 1999. [23] According to King, the original title of the novel was "Cancer." [21] A script based on King’s 2001 novel [24] was written by Kazdan and Goldman . [22] Before starting work on the painting, Kazdan read King’s 4-5 novels and was not only a fan of his work, but also films that were shot about his novels. [11] He especially liked the films Carrie , Radiance , Misery , Stay with Me , and Escape from the Shawshank . [11] When he read the novel, he realized that this was just the story he was looking for, he wanted to make a film, to do it in a new way, not like he was shooting before. [11] The director liked that the story of the characters and the relationship seemed very real, similar to the truth. [11] Kazdan sent the author of the novel a draft script and fragments of the footage that King liked. [11] Strong humor added to the script, bordering on hysteria, is the director’s contribution. Casting
| “ | I was exhausted, broken, torn to pieces. As a result, the film simply did not give the desired result, but all the actors have such an experience. [8] | ” |
- Damien Lewis , Gary Jones
The director of the film liked the work of actor Donnie Wahlberg in the movie " Ransom " and he got the role of Dudditz. [11] Kazdan gave Damien Lewis a book, The Dream Catcher , and told him to read it, since he wants Lewis to play a major role. [four]
The actor hoped that having starred in such a picture, he could make his way in the film industry, but this did not happen. [25] For Thomas Jane, this picture was the first in the list of films based on Stephen King's novels. [26]
Filming
The picture was shot near the city of Prince George in British Columbia . [11] In the middle of winter, because according to the scenario there should have been snow on the ground. [11] Sometimes it was very cold, the temperature dropped below 27 degrees. [11] Despite the weather, the Canadian members of the film crew, according to the director, kept excellent [11] . The hut itself, in which the heroes met, was shot in the forest, and its interior was in a studio in Vancouver [11] . The director invited to come to the shooting of Stephen King, but he still did not dare, despite the desire. [11] The scene in the bathroom made such a terrifying impression on him that he considered it proper for himself to share this with the audience. [11] Stephen King noted that no one had shown anything like this in a movie. [11] Because of this and her similar scenes in the film, she received an R rating, which the director was pleased with. [11] Kazdan spoke very warmly and respectfully of the Canadian actor Eric Kinlenside, who played in this scene, especially admired his patience in such a delicate scene that was shot for four days. [eleven]
Music
The music for the picture was written by James Newton Howard. [27]
Premiere
Held on April 11, 2003. [1] Despite close cooperation in the process of working on the picture, Kazdan and King first met at the premiere. [11] The director of the film believes that the long absence of his work is due to the failure of the picture at the box office. [16] [28] His next picture was published only after 9 years. [29]
Budget and fees
The budget of the picture was 68 million dollars, [2] [28] and the fees in the United States were only 48.3 million. [24]
