Johann Deisenhofer ( German: Johann Deisenhofer ; born September 30, 1943 , Zuzamaltheim , Germany ) is a German biochemist, winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry . Member of NAS of the USA (1997) and Leopoldins (2003).

Biography

Born in Germany in a small town Zuzamaltheim . In 1965-1971 he studied at the Munich Technical University . In 1974, he completed his dissertation under the supervision of Robert Huber at the Max Planck Society . Daisenhofer, Robert Huber and Hartmut Michel were able to obtain the exact structure of the bacterial photosynthetic reaction center , for which in 1988 they were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry . In 1988, Deisenhofer moved to Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is a professor in the Department of Biophysics at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center [3] . Member of the European Academy (1989). Fello of the American Crystallographic Association and the American Association for the Promotion of Science. Member of the , and others.

He signed the Prevention to Humanity (1992) [4] and the Third Humanist Manifesto (2003) [5] , and in 2016, a letter urging Greenpeace , the United Nations, and governments around the world to stop fighting genetically modified organisms ( GMOs ) [ 6] [7] [8] .
