Bogle Eric

Eric Bogle ( born September 23, 1944 in Peebles, Scotland ) is an Australian folk artist and author, best known for his two anti-war songs, which created many cover versions: “ And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda ”and“ No Man's Land (The Green Fields of France). ”

Biography

Eric Bogle was born into the family of a Scottish piper , began to write poetry at the age of eight, and later tried to succeed in the sciffle scene. In 1969, he emigrated to Australia, married here and settled in Brisbane , becoming an active member of the Canberra Folk Club [1] .

Only in 1980, Eric Bogle decided to become a professional musician. By this time, he had already gained worldwide fame as the author of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda (1972). This touching and tragic narrative about the fate of the Australian and New Zealand infantry ( ANZAC ) soldiers fighting at Gallipoli , marked the beginning of Bogl's subsequently famous series of compositions about the First World War . The song was performed and recorded at different times by a total of more than 80 musicians. [2]

“No Man's Land (Green Fields of France)”, a song created by the author under the impression of visiting a military cemetery in the north of France , also gained great fame and is often performed as a dedication to all those who fell on the battlefields. The Fureys performed it for 26 weeks on the Irish charts, 10 of them at # 1. [one]

Eric Bogle lives near Adelaide and performs with an ensemble consisting of John Jones ( Eng. Jon Jones , violin , guitar ) and David O'Neill ( Eng. David O'Neill , Mandolin ). He also collaborates with keyboardist, bass player and saxophonist Ian Blake (ex-Pyewackett). [one]

Among the musicians who performed Eric Bogle songs at different times are June Tabor, The Men They Couldn't Hang , The Clancy Brothers, John McDermott, Liam Clancy, Mike Harding, The Pogues , Dropkick Murphys , Billy Brann, John Williamson. In 2000, Bogle's box set (5 CDs) titled “Singing The Spirit Home”. In 2006, he had a big tour of the UK.

Eric Bogle - Knight of the Order of Australia . For his work, he was awarded the UN Peace Medal . [3]
